I have received several requests from media outlets to give a lung specialists opinion on "swine flu". There are apparently a couple of "suspect" cases in SD. For the benefit of users of this site, don't worry about it.
Its an influenza A virus and causes the same symptoms and illness as any influenza virus. Its self-limited and should be managed the same way as any other case of the flu. If you have typical flu symptoms and traveled to an affected area cover your nose and mouth with a mask and go see your doctor. Wash your hands, stay home from work or school if you are sick and use common sense. There is a medicine that can shorten the length of illness and reduce symptoms (Tamiflu). The flu shot doesn't protect you against this strain of influenza A.
Will there be a vaccine for this virus? That is up to the government. Heck, it might lead to an uptick in business for local hospitals. Perhaps its part of the "stimulus plan".
