I remember reading an article while in a doctor's waiting room that LED's as currently able to be manufactured are too big for personal TV's because the distance between the viewer and the screen is not great enough. Think of looking at pictures in the newspaper under a magnifying glass. The size of the pixel (I might be wrong on this terminology) is much smaller in LCD's and plasma than LED's, so when you sit only 6 - 10 feet away the LCD & plasmas looks very sharp.

My uncle lived in LA many, many years ago and used to go to Dodgers games alot. He was able to get a tour of the stadium shortly after they installed their first "video" board in the early 70's I think. He may have been telling a good story to a wide-eyed lad, but I remember him saying that there were clusters of three standard 60-watt light bulbs for the color, and a general white behind them if all were off. Not sure what colors the 60 watters were, but probably not too far from rgb. Computerized as to what lights switched on and off. HEAT was brutal, and that was the biggest limitation on how much they could use it. Very short scenes, then off to cool down. don't remember what he said the size was, but I'm sure it was very small by today's standards.

I know my uncle told me many tales, and if this was one of them, I have no problem learning that now. He was, and still is, a great man.
Back when we were building our original video displays, we went about it in two different ways. One way was with colored light bulbs (red, green, blue, and 'white') the same size as your house light bulbs. We also had lampbanks. The bulbs on the lampbanks were argon filled. The lampbank would be loaded behind a plastic lens (same colors as the regular size light bulbs previously listed). We had different size lampbanks and lenses depending on what the display needed. One of the largest regular size light bulb signs I remember was for Sam's Town Casino. I believe the contract called for over 10,000 of each color light bulb.

When we first started to run LEDs, it was had to get a blue LED made cheaply and with a true color. Nochia was able to make a blue LED a few years ago that really saved us some money because of the decrease in the cost. Of course when we first started building boards with LEDs, we had to hand load the LEDs.

So much for that. Maybe the latest new head hog will stand under DAKTRONICS, too.

Doing the "pig call". That alone probably had him thinking about going back to Omaha. ;D

University of Oklahoma Regents approved about $10 million for new scoreboards less than a year after the Sooners' Big 12 rivals, Texas and Texas A&M, spent millions on new electronic displays, including the Longhorns' massive "Godzillatron." South Dakota-based Daktronics Inc., the same company that put together Texas' new scoreboard, was selected for the Oklahoma project.

The first phase of the project at the football stadium, which will be installed before the start of the 2007 season, includes a new video replay board in the north end zone. The second phase features a new four-sided video scoreboard, video displays and sound system at the Lloyd Noble Center in time for the 2007-2008 basketball season.

The final phase of the project, scheduled for completion before the 2008 football season, will include the replacement of the current 21-by-36-foot video scoreboard in the stadium's south end zone with a mammoth 32-by-113-foot display capable of high-definition video replay.

OU's scoreboard won't be as large as the University of Texas' aptly named Godzillatron, which towers over the stadium's south end zone at 55 feet tall and 134 feet wide, but will be similar in size to new boards at Nebraska and Arkansas.

Meanwhile, at Oklahoma State University, stadium renovations are continuing at Boone Pickens Stadium, but tentative plans do call for new video scoreboards once the project is completed in two years, said OSU spokesman Kevin Klintworth.

The plan is for two 20-by-60-foot video scoreboards in the west end zone and two smaller screens in the east zone, but details haven't been decided, Klintworth said.
Sounds like my department is going to be busy in the near future with some big stuff. Anyway Dak can work a couple of SDSU-OU games into the deal I'd be in heaven then.

Sounds like Dak is cutting out the Commercial displays department and moving all of those people over to Video. Not really a popular decision among the people in that department. Well there is now going to be a 5 million dollar empty new addition in the new building for Dak. Plus, Dak announced this quarter will probably end up being a little slower than expected.

While it might not be popular in Commercial Mfg., with the available employees in Redwood Falls, it is hard for Dak to not use this opportunity. We aren't cutting out the Commercial dipsplays department, just moving the location the displays will be built. No one will be losing a job.  We will be able to use the current Commercial employees to fill the opening in the other areas of Mfg.  It was a little bit of a shock to hear the news announced this week, it will be a good thing for Dak.  As for the new addition, we will still be moving admin offices into the new addition.  The original building for Dak in our current location is an eyesore and not the best place to have potential customers enter the company.  The new addition will be the headquarters for corp. Dak.

                        I know that........
I also know the truth of this "Rumor" as you call it because I work in the department that is at question. And Daktronics is a public company because it is publicly traded on the market and open for others to invest.......

Re: Daktronics gets another Big Deal

Daktronics is publicly traded but that isn't what I meant by it being a private business.

Go back and read my comment.  I didn't use the word "rumor".  In fact, I assumed that because you are working inside the company, the statement you made may be true.  Your employer may not appreciate the fact that you may be making statements it (Dakotronics) deems to be defamatory made by you without any privilege or subject to any defenses provided under the law-- I don't know what your employer's position may be on your statements but some companies would deem your statement to be harmful to their interests.  I didn't want the message board to be involved in your publication of potentially defamatory statements.

Re: Daktronics gets another Big Deal

Daktronics will announce their end of the fiscal year information on Weds, May 30. With the amount of possible trading either buying or selling which may take place in the next day or two, any information the company hasn't released in a press release could be taken as insider trading. That is the reason you see trade deadlines for employees with their 401k and personal stocks. Safest thing to do regarding news is if you read it in the Extra Extra or see it mentioned on TV or in the newspaper, it is safe to mention here. I don't know what your post stated but I'm betting JackJD is siding with caution.

Royals Fans to Watch Highlights and Replays on World's Largest HD Display

MegaTron hits Kansas City. Should be the world's biggest until either the Yankees or Cowboys new stadium comes along.
                                http://news.moneycentral.msn.com/tic...75&Symbol=DAKT

The Kansas City Royals and Daktronics DAKT announced today that the world's largest high definition (HD) light emitting diode (LED) video display will be installed at Kauffman Stadium prior to the start of the 2008 Major League Baseball season.
Daktronics HD-X LED technology will be installed in a huge outfield structure behind center field measuring more than 100 feet high by 85 feet wide, topped with the familiar Royals' iconic golden crown. The LED display will contain more than 1800 full-color lines of resolution with lines on 16 millimeter (.63") spacing. The display will be the largest HD LED board in the world, surpassing the former record holders designed and manufactured by Daktronics for Dolphin Stadium in Miami and Darrell K Royal - Texas Memorial Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas in Austin.
The 2008 season upgrade will also include Daktronics LED technology incorporated into the fence in left field, which will be used to display up-to-the-minute scores and information from other games in progress. The outfield fence display will measure approximately 8 feet high and 128 feet wide.
Additional equipment will be installed prior to the start of the 2009 season. Two LED displays will be positioned on the fascia of the upper deck seating along right field and left field. These ribbon boards will measure approximately 4 feet high by 380 feet long. Also included will be two additional LED displays positioned in the outfield above the new restaurant/bar and above the new Hall of Fame, each to measure approximately 5 feet high by 108 feet long. Fans near the Little "K" baseball field, and by the "Taste of KC" plaza area, will also be able to catch the action on Daktronics LED video displays.
