School named after SDSU alum Ben Reifel

A new school planned in southeastern Sioux Falls will be called Benjamin Reifel Middle School in honor of the former U.S. representative from South Dakota.

From the Argus Leader: Born in 1906 on the Rosebud Indian Reservation, Reifel went on to school at South Dakota State University and later Harvard University. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and he went on to become the first Native American to represent South Dakota in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1961 to 1971.

Back in the days of being a Young GOP member had the opportunity to shake his hand several times. A very nice man.

When I was SDSU Alumni Director, Ben donated his congressional desk to us. That is still being used by Andi Fouberg, and when she sits at her desk in the new SDSU Alumni Center, she can look straight ahead and see Reifel Hall to the east. Pretty nice perk! Ben was a great Native American, a very great and humble congressman, and just an all-around good person.

Badlands National Park has its visitor center named after Ben Reifel as well.

We were there last year I thought that was the name.
