HS State Track Meet

There have been some outstanding performances at the high school track meet even though the weather has not been cooperative. One particular record-seting performance jumps out:

...Brookings Junior Addison DeHaven (son of SDSU Track and Field and Cross Country Coach Rod DeHaven), smashed the all-class state-meet record in the 3200: 9:00.19. The old mark was 9:10.53 by Tony Smoragiewicz, RCC, 2012. Addison also ran a leg on the winning 4 x 800 relay and will run the 1600 today.

Another outstanding performance, breaking a time-honored record, was in the AA shot put. Taken from Stu Whitney's article in today's Argus Leader: "...Roosevelt junior Jack Lembcke unleashing a meet-record heave of 63-10.5 on his final throw to win the boys shot put in dominant fashion. No one else came within 15 feet of Lembcke, who topped the old record of 62-1 shared by George Amundson of Aberdeen Central (1969) and Lance Wipf of Yankton (1993)." http://www.argusleader.com/article/2...l-soaring-high

DeHaven won the 1600 in 4:16 and some change. He's faster but winning the event is all that counts.

And then he anchored the winning Brookings sprint medley relay team.

Four first places with one record-smashing performance...easy pick for outstanding boys AA athlete.

DeHaven is the man. Brookings has had few complete track teams. Definitely few and far between. Why does names of old guys like Hoppy Rykus, Nig Johnson and Roger Nelson come to mind? They finished high in 1952 or 1953. Not many track trophies at BHS since then.

Watched some of the meet Saturday on SDPTV with my brother from MPLS. He was impressed by the coverage and said the MN public television would not cover high school events like this and certainly would not do such a professional job. Props to SD Public Broadcasting.

Thanks for pointing that out Witness! State records seem to never get set at the State Meet. Howard Wood winds cause the problem. Btw, I know the difference since I held some relay State Track meet records back in the day!

And to follow on witness's and RabbitNation's comments: South Dakota has recognized some state records even thought they were run after our State Meet.** Also, where a record-setting performance occurs is not a factor as long as the athlete if from South Dakota. At state meets, coaches are going for points and some of the top runners have to scale back because they have a number of tough races...so, not as likely to set all-time records at a State Meet.



**I think Grumstrup's outstanding 3200 was run after our state track season was concluded his senior year. Smoragiewicz, 's best was also run as a senior (?) and I'm not certain if it occurred after the track season was concluded. Addison DeHaven is a junior. I don't know where the cutoff is for when records "count"...prior to actual graduation ceremonies? June 30? There is no official body monitoring all-time records. All-time state meet records are monitored by the Activities Association. Many years ago Coach Rich Greeno spearheaded the effort to compile and maintain the top-10 performances list in all track and field events with the top performance being, of course, the all-time record. The top-10 list is very reliable now...might have had a gap or two in the early years but it's the track-bible now.

Addison will own all of the distance records by the time he is done. I hate watching distance races, but watching him is incredible. He had a 250 meter lead this weekend and then punched it the last 150 and blew what was left of the doors off the field. I've also watched him sacrifice his time to stay back with teammates and encourage them. When it's go time, he shouts encouragement and then puts the pedal to the metal and wins the race. Gotta love the kid. He can win anytime he wants, but understands he needs the team to get greater results.
