The Wednesday Report, Jan. 17, 2007

I finally figured out it was winter (those five inches of ice I chipped away from my front steps was, I think, a hint), so the winter sports now take the fore.

Winter Sports
Men's Basketball, 4-13
Last Week: Lost to #12 Butler 62-47.
Next Week: Jan. 21, at Cal State Northridge (9-7, 3-2 Big West).
News and Views: The Jackrabbit men tried to climb the mountain again against Butler, and for the third straight year were turned back with a double-digit loss. But glimmers of hope still could be spotted in the 15-point loss at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The turnovers which had plagued the Jacks, well, ever since they joined D-I were way down. The Jacks came out after a poor first half and played with the top-20 Bulldogs, making their crowd a bit nervous and their coach unhappy. It's good whenever the Jacks make the opposing coach unhappy.

United Basketball Conference action started this past week, with New Jersey Tech visiting IPFW, and the home-standing Mastodons pulled away from the Highlanders 82-65.

Women's Basketball, 13-5
Last week: Defeated Minnesota 59-58; defeated Minnesota-Duluth 64-51.
Next Game: Jan. 25 at Utah Valley State (10-8, 0-0 UBC); Jan. 27 at Texas-Pan American (8-11, 0-0 UBC) to begin United Basketball Conference play.
News and views: What a game, what a finish! The Jackrabbits barely, barely, barely beat the Minnesota Gophers in Williams Arena on a last hundredth-of-a-second shot by Maria Boever. In one of the wilder finishes ever in women's college basketball (if I may be so bold), the referees initially called Boever's shot good, then went to the TV replay. One referee appeared to wave the basket off, causing the Gophers and their fans to erupt in celebration. But the final word from the ref crew was: basket good, and the Jackrabbits and their fans were the ones celebrating in Minneapolis.

After such a game, a bit of a letdown was maybe to be expected, and that's what happened to the Jacks. They played sluggishly into the second half before finally pulling away from D-II Minnesota-Duluth in Frost Arena.

Next, the Jacks begin their first (and last) season in the United Basketball Conference, which opened women's basketball action last week as Texas-Pan American hosted New Jersey Tech, and the UTPA Broncs defeated the Highlanders 55-44.

Winter Sports

Men's Basketball, 4-12
Last Week: Lost to Central Florida, 72-61.
Next Week: Jan. 13, at #12 Butler (14-1, 3-0 Horizon League).
News and Views: The Jacks get another view at the top of the mountain, traveling to Indianapolis to take on the Butler Bulldogs, who are rated #12 in this week's AP and USA Today/ESPN polls.  You can't win the game if you don't play the game.  The Jacks recovered from a bad effort at Idaho to struggle valiantly against a talented Central Florida team at home, but just didn't have enough to bring home the win.

Hopeful news came this week when it was reported that both 6'7" forward Ben Beran and 6'8" center Mohammed Berte might return to finish their final year of basketball eligibility at SDSU next year.  This would certainly be a much different Jackrabbit team with Beran and Berte on the court--five losses (maybe more) might be wins right now with a beefed-up front court.  That's the difference between the Jacks' current 4-12 record and a record of 9-7, or maybe even better.

Next Game: Dec. 22, at Frost Arena vs. Montana State (3-9), 7 p.m.
News and Views: The Jacks got a much-needed win in Kansas City vs. the Kangaroos, after dropping the fourth game of their 5-game road swing in Green Bay to the Phoenix. Blake Yackley was the leading scorer in Kansas City with 18 points, and Matt Cadwell led the Jacks in Green Bay with 14. The Jacks showed excellent scoring balance against UMKC with five players in double figures. This was especially remarkable given that both Andy Kleinjan and Michael Loney were out with knee injuries.

Last week: Beat Colorado 80-56, Lost at Missouri 62-79, beat San Jose State 98-63.
Next Game: Dec. 28, at Alabama (9-4).
News and Views: Two great games and one lackluster outing lead to a 2-1 record for the Jackrabbits last week. They showed their usual toughness and fire with big home wins against Colorado and San Jose State, but were taken out of their game by a good Missouri team that is 11-1 and receiving votes in the polls. The Jacks venture into SEC territory next week with a game at Alabama.

Junkanoo Jam Pictures

To tell you the truth, I was so into the games against Virginia and Baylor that I forgot to take many pictures of the actual games.  Still, I hope some of these pics will give you a taste of what it was like to be with the Rabbits at Junkanoo Jam:
Flying from Miami to Freeport with the Baylor women's basketball team (somewhere back there)

The Junkanoo Jam pre-tournament banquet featured a Junkanoo Band, which featured . . . MORE COWBELL!!!

Snookums and I posed a danger to pedestrians and traffic on Grand Bahama Island in our affectionately named "Clown Car."

Jackrabbit Nation: Bahamas Battalion. We had as many supporters in the stands as anyone.

Our team poses with the Junkanoo Jam Lucaya Division Runnerup Trophy
