Default Utah game thread

Just a liitle more than 21 hours to tip-off against the Utes. Need to give them a little pay back from the 67-59 loss they gave us last year. They outrebounded us by 20 in that game. I look for a much different result this time around. SDSU 71 Utah 59.

GO JACKS!

Served some of them at Applebee's tonight, not sure if it will affect them 24hrs before the game, but they all were eating appetizers and things that weren't so healthy...

From Wikipedia -

Women's basketball
The program's most successful season came in the 2005-2006 campaign. The Utes, who finished in 2nd place in the Mountain West Conference, won the conference tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 14th time in school history. After getting by Middle Tennessee in the first round of the 2006 Women's NCAA Tournament, Utah surprised the 4th seeded Arizona State Sun Devils to advance to the Sweet 16 for only the second time in school history. There the Utes faced 8th seeded Boston College and gutted out a 3 point win, advancing to the Elite Eight for the first time in school history. Making the regional finals, Utah became the first womens team in Mountain West Conference history to ever do so. In doing so, the Utes would go on to play 2nd seeded, and eventual national champion, Maryland. The game went into OT, but Maryland prevailed and Utah's amazing run came to an end.

In the 2006 WNBA Draft Utah guard Shona Thorburn was selected by Minnesota Lynx with the 7th pick and Kim Smith, a forward for the Utes, was selected 13th overall by the Sacramento Monarchs.

So we know this is a top contending team in the MWC, and has done well in the NCAA tourney. Knock the Utes off tonight, and Jacks will have some serious mojo going into Cancun.

Also noticed on their web site that they will be a little thin at point guard. Two projected starters at guard were enjured and not expected to return to action until later in the year. The expected starter 6' junior hurt a knee and her backup another 6' junior had back surgery. So, the Utes will use two true freshman at point guard. We need to take advantage of that.

The Jacks need to get some improved play from Jen and Ketty to beat the Utes. Our defense will certainly be their - hopefully our full compliment of offense will accompany.

About the Utes: At 1-0, Utah will be playing the 1,000th game in the history of the program. . . . Morgan Warburton, a senior guard, is the only active player in the Mountain West Conference with 1,000 career points. . . . The Utes opened their season with a win over Jackson State and are receiving votes in both polls.
About South Dakota State: With wins over Wisconsin and Missouri, the Jackrabbits are 2-0 on the season. . . . Utah won the only meeting between the two teams, a 67-59 victory last season.

The SLC Trib article about the game tonight.

Let's get the Jacks in the polls with more than a token 1 by beating the Utes tonight.

Students, this will likely be two teams in the NCAA tourney this March. Get out and BACK THE JACKS TONIGHT!

2008 Utah Utes outlook article....

Interesting info near the bottom.

the Utes have perhaps the two best individual players in the conference in Morgan Warburton and Kalee Whipple.
A 5-foot-11 senior shooting guard, Warburton was a first team all-conference pick a year ago. Coming into this season, she's the preseason MWC Player of the Year and has seen her name dot various All-America lists.
Whipple, a 6-0 junior, is more explosive than Warburton going to the basket, but not as good a shooter. Between the two, the Utes should have no problems scoring the basketball.
In a number of ways, however, this season will be as successful as the freshman point guards. Should they thrive, Utah will be at or near the top of the league. Should they struggle, the offense will struggle as well.

IMHO, Guess we'll be seeing lots of pressure on the frosh point guards and keep the ball away from Whipple and Warburton.
