      Re: Campus Construction

Took a walk around campus today before work. Thought you might enjoy these pictures of construction. The biggest visible changes from the previous photos I posted are at the union and the residence halls.

Here's the plan for the Residence halls

      http://sdsufans.com/board/picture.ph...5&pictureid=96

Below: Residence halls viewing north from 9th avenue. Building 2 (to the right in the photo) is now under construction between Matthews and Brown, and west of Grove.

      http://sdsufans.com/board/picture.ph...&pictureid=115

The following pic was taken looking east, just south of the south entrance to the Rotunda.

      http://sdsufans.com/board/picture.ph...&pictureid=116

Looking south at the construction site. Building 1 to the right, Matthews hall enclosed starwell addition to the left, Building 2 to the back left, behind Matthews.

      http://sdsufans.com/board/picture.ph...&pictureid=119

Below - getting ready to add more food service spaces on the west and north side of the Union.

      http://sdsufans.com/board/picture.ph...&pictureid=120

See the albums in my profile for comparison pics. I'll try to update the science building, Ag Hall, and Dairy Micro pics soon.

SDSU will be going to the Legislature for authorization to plan and build a new parking lot on the block south of the electrical engineering building, Phase II of the electrical engineering building, and several other projects.

I thought that was done already. I know the school has bought those houses (I live in one of them) but maybe they have not gotten it approved to be a parking lot but they own that block.

            Re: Campus Construction

Just to help clarify. When they go to the legislature they will be going for approval of the whole Regental budget. They will call in each school during this time and ask them to lay out what they have requested and why. If anyone has ever sat in on this, the appropriations committee can ask some insanely rediculous questions. Because this project's cost is over the minimum threshold is why we have to seek approval from Pierre, even if the money was all privately donated. I would be surprised if this is a big piece of legislation, but if they do ask questions they will ask about continued maintanance and how that will be payed for and I'm sure there will be questions about SDSU growing into Brookings.

Wasn't there at least one appropriations committee member that voted against SDSU building the Dykhouse Center even though all the money for the project was donated and in hand? Something about not needing the facility because of the new Wellness Center.

IIRC two members voted against it.

Greenfield votes against anything form SDSU... as far as I can tell. I had to deal with him we were in the final stages of the wellness center.

I don't have very nice things to say, so I'll listen to my mother...

I've tried to reason with Brock on these issues and he won't hear it. It isn't that he's not a supporter of SDSU, it seems he is an antagonist.

I am glad that you have tried to talk to him, as he seems to be an antagonist on other issues too, plus his district will with out a doubt re-elect him. I would love to sit in on one of his cracker barrel forums and listen to what he tells his constituents.

Brock's problems are more with the Board of Regents then with SDSU. He votes against most of the BOR bills with maybe a few exceptions. I respect Brock because he is always honest and tells you how he is going to vote. He makes his decision and his position won't flip flop. Yea, I wish he voted for the SDSU construction bills. Like JackMD mentioned, I don't try and convert him on SDSU bills anymore either. However, sometimes when he fights the regents it actually benefits SDSU too.

Just a quick update. HB 1025-1027 all passed the senate. It was nearly unanimous with the dissenting votes from these 2 gentlemen:

Senator Ryan Maher (D) – Isabel

                              District 28

Senator Mike Vehle (R) – Mitchell

                              District 20

I can't speak to their logic and won't get a chance to ask why they are opposed but perhaps others would like to. It is great to see support from all the rest, please consider taking time to thank your senator. Unless, its one of these guys.

Does he vote against all university construction projects, or just SDSU construction projects?

I realize it doesn't make any difference, but there are plenty of SDSU grads in Mobridge. I wonder if they realize how he votes on these things.
