Oregon State Edges SDSU At Paradise Jam

ST. THOMAS, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS - South Dakota State rallied from a 13 point deficit to take the lead late in the game but couldn't hold off Oregon State, losing 68-65 on the final day of the Paradise Jam Saturday.

Shannon Schlagel's three-point attempt as time ran out came up short as the Jacks fell to 4-2 overall, 1-2 in the tourney against Division I competition. Oregon State is now 2-2.

OSU scored the first six points of the game, but the Jacks were within 10-9 when the Beavers went on a 12-0 run to lead 22-9. OSU led 39-26 at halftime.

The Jacks were down 32-17 when they started a rally which saw them tie the game at 46 on a three-pointer by Megan Vogel with 12:18 to play.

The Jacks got the lead at 56-55 on a free throw by Schlagel with 7:54 to go and were ahead 61-58 following a basket and free throw by Vogel with 5:53 to go.

Oregon State then scored eight straight points, getting three baskets from Shannon Howell, who was the only player in double figures for OSU with 24.

SDSU closed within one a couple times, the last at 66-65 on a layup by Vogel with 42 seconds to play. Howell followed that with two free throws. SDSU got off four shots in the closing 25 seconds, none of which found their mark.

Schlagel, who was just 4-for-15 from the field but hit 9-of-10 free throws, led the Jacks with 17 points while Vogel scored 14 points in the second half to finish with 16. Sarita DeBoer had 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

OSU out-shot SDSU 47 per cent (25x53) to 39 per cent (22x57). Each team had 35 rebounds.
