A little something for the first collegian I've been working on all summer.
This year the Jackrabbit soccer team returns to the soccer pitch with a passion in their eyes, to be the best team in the Summit League. After downing NDSU last fall in the United Soccer Conference champion ship game, the Jacks return a core group of upper classmen to a team full
of depth. The Rabbits also bring in a class of twelve recruits that is ranked fourth by soccerbuzz.com; the team is in good hands coming into the season.
Senior goalkeeper Nicole Lograsso returns as the team’s main goalkeeper allowing 0.81 goals a game last year. Incoming freshmen Daniella Pappas, and Brienna Rogers will compete for a spot in goal and a chance to give Lograsso a chance to rest up during the season.
On the defensive side of the ball, juniors Kerstyn Farrell, Alex Schaller, and Kelly Larson are expected to lead the deep group of defenders this year. Sophomore Jessica Heine should team up with Larson to form a defensive attack that will be formidable. Incoming freshmen make up the
final three spots on the depth chart as JoLynn Janckila, Emily Quigley, and Betsy Yungbauer all hope to get some playing time throughout the season.
A solid group of forwards return this year with a mission. Juniors Kellyn Farrell and Chelsey Goosen, along with senior Kelsey Worcester scored almost half of the goals last year and look to build on that performance. Junior Kellie Van Gerpen and sophomore Chelsea Lira will be looked
to fill in during matches frequently. Depth is added with freshmen Danielle Healy, Elizabeth Nagelhout, Kayla Perleberg all depth to this core. Freshman Kelli Herman remains a question mark as an injury has slowed her and she has not recovered yet from it.
The midfielder spot is where things get interesting for the Jacks, as Goosen has played the position in spring ball. Senior Vanessa Paswaters hopes to for a successful return from a knee injury this fall. Senior Liz Lane has proven herself a game breaker making her the impressive
part of her game mid-air duels for the ball. Sophomore Diana Nuss also returns to round out the experience in the midfielder position. Newcomers Tory Schiltgen, Kaitlin Justice, Danielle Neuhalfen, and Lexy Drayton all could give the returning players a good run for their money and have a starting spot by the end of the season.
Seventeen games this year marked by ten home dates dot the schedule for the Jacks. Besides home games with rival NDSU and perennial conference top dog Oakland, several good teams come to Fishback Soccer Complex. Mark your calendar for September 23 as Iowa, that is right the Hawkeyes, come to South Dakota in what is being billed as the opening event of Hobo Day week.
    Who to watch:
Expect Nicole Lograsso to shine again this year in goal as she wraps up her career as a Jackrabbit. Kelli Herman if healthy could turn into a goal-scoring machine and be the future for the soccer team. Chelsey Goosen, if the game is on the line look for her to get scoring opportunities. Emily Quigley described by many coaches as versatile on the field, could be playing in many different positions this year.

    My Prediction:

Last season was not a fluke and the Jacks are out to prove that this year. With an impressive amount of talent on the field this team could turn some heads. With that said a win total between seven and eleven is my guess for the year. Unfortunately, if the team performs that well they will still miss postseason play as they are not eligible for it until next year.
