Re: UND and the Big Sky

I was just thinking about how glad I am that we're not sitting on our laurels, still a DII team, wondering if we should have made the moves we already have. No risk, no reward. More accurately, in this case, no risk equals a big mistake.

Re: UND and the Big Sky

somebody had put this together on Bisonville:

Two divisions in the Big Sky
      East:
      Montana
      Montana State
      North Dakota
      North Dakota State
      South Dakota State
      Northern Colorado

      West:
      Idaho State
      Weber State
      East Washington
      Portland State
      Sacramento State
      Northern Arizona

Purely speculation at this point, and i don't think we have to worry about UND much (since they are so behind in the process), but i would have no fears if our next conference looked like the above layout. Would definately need the support of the Montana schools as they would be competing against 4 provisional schools for the near future.  I believe the BSC commish is on record of taking up to three teams.  I hope we are one of the three.

You have to laugh at some of the arrogance from the UND fans/posters who think the overture from the Big Sky office indicates they are really looking for a NDSU/UND combination rather than SDSU.

I use to lurk over there and then I just got feed up with all the BS. I don't visit their "fantasy" land anymore. I prefer mine, right here.

Another thing to keep in mind with all this UND to the Big Sky talk is that, UND would not be playoff eligible until 2010 (at the soonest).

              LOL

Reading this flurry of activity after that newspaper article has to be one of the funniest things that I've ever seen. I guess its a good testament to the power of the media.

So, all you guys freaking out, tell me, what new news has come out about UND and the big sky? I wonder what UND is going to present to the big sky? Maybe this could be the presentation...

              1. We don't really have any way to increase revenue, as all of our revenue sources are maxed out.

              2. We still don't even have womens hockey fully funded, let alone being title IX complient, let alone starting to increase funds for other sports to go to the D-I level.

              3. We still haven't declared that were going D-I, or had a revenue study (which will indicate growth potential is maxed out).

              4. Our president is on the record as saying that D-I couldn't be done for less than a $70 million endowment (published in an NCAA newspaper article that every big sky pres and ad read).

              5. Its going to look very impressive to the big sky that they've shown no commitment to D-I, and are hoping for a conference affiliation first. Wonder what kind of luck the big sky has had with schools in california that they accept to the conference before they are D-I.

None of this has changed from yesterday. Unless North Dakota just got another 750,000 people in pop. they can't support two D-I schools.

                  Add to that:

                  6. Our biggest donor, the one who lets us play in the buildings he built -- the same guy who forced us to keep our racist mascot -- hasn't been too keen on the DI move, either.

                    7. Roger Thomas the Athletic Director at UND is a finalist for the NCC Comissioner job and may be moving to Sioux Falls soon.

Ralph did die a few years ago although he may be communicating his thoughts on DI from the grave.

Yes, but now his family has his money. Isn't Betty still with us? And they still own that tacky casino. Down here we have the Gaylord family. Makes no difference that he's dead since his daughter runs things now.

We did receive a letter inviting us to apply for membership from the Big Sky.  As of right now the Missouri Valley is not interested in expansion. The Mid-Con is the other conference that has shown interest in NDSU, SDSU and UNC.

I agree with the move to D1. 1st choice - Missouri Valley. 2nd choice - Big Sky. I would consider the move a failure if SDSU ended up in the Mid-Continent. Right now the Mid-Continent is a conference that every member is trying to get out of and into a better conference. Currently, the Missouri Valley has 10 members - I am hoping they step up soon and decide they want a couple more.

There's a Roger Thomas interview on The Forum site, when he was on WDAY-AM's Hot Talk today. He stated that the Big Sky sent the letters out to those schools that obviously were interested and already DI, as well as other schools that may be interested that the Big Sky is looking at expansion. I'm guessing Idaho, maybe Wyoming, as well as lots of other possibilities (schools that may or may not move to DI) were sent out letters.

I wouldn't doubt it if USD got a letter.

A couple of interesting articles from the Fargo paper in 2002. At that time USD was in favor of the entire NCC going D1. Could they still be in the mix like UND? If UND leaves the NCC, there really isn't much left of the conference or for USD.
