The high school girls honor athlete award went to Roosevelt senior Kathleen Hruska.

The awards are given to the top male and female athletes from the city's high schools and colleges and are presented by the Chamber of Commerce and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Each nominee was chosen based on athletic and academic achievements, as well as community involvement. One male and female candidate was selected from each school. For Hruska, the award was a bookend to an incredible school year that began with her receiving the Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year Award for South Dakota in the fall. That flowed into a starting spot on Roosevelt's undefeated Class AA state championship basketball team.

Hruska was an academic All-Greater Dakota Conference selection in both volleyball and basketball and did volunteer work at elementary schools and retirement homes in the city. She will continue her volleyball career at South Dakota State this fall.
Hruska is the sixth Rough Rider to claim the girls award since 1993, which gave Roosevelt the most awards in that category over the last 13 ceremonies."There's a really good program (at Roosevelt) for FCA and sports," Hruska said. "It really works together well, I think."
