SDSU names McDaniel assistant coach
Phil McDaniel, who helped guide New Mexico State to consecutive apppearances in the NCAA tournament, has been named assistant volleyball coach at South Dakota State University.
McDaniel served the last three seasons as an assistant coach at NMSU, where he helped lead the Aggies to an 86-15 overall record, three straight Sun Belt Conference titles and NCAA appearances in 2003 and 2004. In addition to his duties at New Mexico State, McDaniel was head coach of the Diamondback Volleyball Club in Las Cruces.
"We are fortunate to be able to hire Phil because his character and personality are a perfect fit for our program," SDSU head coach Andrew Palileo said. "His experience with a successful program at New Mexico State will enable us to improve as we continue our progression in the Division I ranks."
McDaniel will join a Jackrabbit squad that completed its inaugural season at the Division I level in 2004 with a 22-12 overall record and top-100 ranking in the Division I volleyball RPI. . . .
A native of Decatur, Ill., McDaniel earned a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Culver-Stockton College (Mo.) in 1996. He added a master's degree in counselor education at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in 1998.
