    SDSU might have conference home

    BY JOSH LINEHAN

South Dakota State University came one step closer to finding a conference home Wednesday.

Now they best tidy the place up, as they're set to have some company.
Officials from the Mid-Continent Conference agreed to site visits at three prospective member schools — SDSU, North Dakota State and Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne.
The decision was reached at the Mid-Con president's council meeting in Chicago.

Representatives from all of the conference's current seven member schools will make a visit to Brookings some time in July or early August while it considers SDSU for membership.

SDSU Director of Athletics Fred Oien said the site visits were an important step toward finding the Jackrabbits a conference home.

"They want to involve all of the current schools, and they've given us a list of things they want to look at and people they want to meet with," Oien said.  .  .  .  (read more)

Last week I spotted coach DeHaven applying what appeared to be Roundup to all of the grass coming up in the cracks so it should be in tip top shape come late July

          1) I'm certain that the Mid-Con is aware of the state of our track facilities and the long-term plan of the athletic department to construct a new track.
          2) Any Mid-Con track meet hosted at SDSU in the forseeable future would likely be held at Howard Wood in Sioux Falls.

North Dakota State put its best foot forward in the months leading up to the decision by the Mid-Continent Conference to grant the Bison a site visit.

The school didn’t go at it alone.

Relationships with South Dakota State, Indiana Purdue-Fort Wayne and Mid-Con commissioner Thomas Douple played a major role in the Bison getting the Mid-Con to come to their campus for an inspection. Wednesday’s announcement was a few years in the making.

“One thing I’ve seen at the Division I level is the A.D.s at that level tend to be more cooperative,” SDSU athletic director Fred Oien said. “There’s not that hatred built up through rivalries. They know how tough it is and you need friends out there.”

As independents – considered the bottom rung of the Division I hierarchy – NDSU, IPFW and SDSU essentially cried on each other’s shoulders.

Each school’s athletic directors got together at NCAA conventions and national athletic directors meetings. They compared notes on academic reform and Division I legislation. They closely monitored the comings and goings of teams in several conferences.

In essence, they asked each other the following question: How do we ditch independent status?

“We all think alike,” said IPFW athletic director Mark Pope. “We all tried to work together. I couldn’t think of a better two institutions to come into a conference with.” . . . (read more)

They need an upgrade which is a part of the move to DI, improvement across the campus/institution. Its not about what deficiencies are present, its about the commitment to improvement and excellence at the highest level. This leap takes courage, fortitude, and needs support.
