      From the St. Paul paper:

Gophers paint South Dakota State into a corner

      From news services
Lindsey Schwartz scored in the 68th minute to give the University of Minnesota soccer team a 2-1 victory over South Dakota State on Sunday in Brookings, S.D., in the Gophers' final nonconference game of the season.

Kelsey Hood scored a goal and added an assist for a personal best of three points. Kaitlin Wagner, taking corner kicks each time, assisted on both Minnesota goals.

Goaltender Lindsey Dare, 6-2-1 this season, recorded five saves. Dare has limited opponents to no more than one goal eight times in nine starts.

For the Jackrabbits, Jenn Davis and Nicole Lograsso each played a half in goal. Davis had four saves and Lograsso three.

The Gophers (8-7-1) went on the attack early in the game and finished with a 23-18 advantage in shots. Schwartz led both teams with six shots, while Hood, Clare Grimwood and Marti Klinsing each recorded three apiece. The Gophers generated nine corner kicks to five for the Jackrabbits.

Kellyn Farrell put six shots on net for South Dakota State (4-9-2), including the Jackrabbits' goal. Kelsey Worcester added four shots.

Minnesota's first goal came in the 23rd minute, when Wagner took a corner kick from the left side and served the ball into the box about 10 yards out. Hood put a header past Davis into the top left corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.

South Dakota State tied the score in the 38th minute on Farrell's unassisted goal. Farrell took the ball down the right sideline and cut to the middle of the field before striking a shot from the top of the box that found the net.

The Gophers had a chance to regain the lead with a corner kick in the 43rd minute. After the ball was served into the box, a scramble developed in front of the net. Grimwood got a foot on it, but her shot went off the crossbar.

Minnesota continued to put pressure on South Dakota State in the second half and took the lead in the 68th minute. Wagner again took a corner kick from the left side and crossed the ball in. Hood headed the ball toward the net, and Schwartz deflected it past Lograsso to give the Gophers a 2-1 lead.

Schwartz had a chance to extend Minnesota's lead in the 75th minute when she got out on a breakaway. Lograsso made the save to keep the game close.

Farrell had a prime opportunity to tie the score with eight minutes left in the match, but Dare stopped her. The Jackrabbits outshot the Gophers 5-0 in the final eight minutes.......
