    Default XC at Regionals

The Jackrabbit men’s cross country team showed once again they’re probably the best SDSU sports team. The Jacks finished fourth in the Midwest Regional at Tulsa on Friday. I thought they had run well enough to get an at large bid to the national meet but it appears that won’t happen this season. Even so, the team continues to move up on the national stage.

The Jackrabbit women finished 16 out of 33 teams led by an outstanding performance by Anna Donnay’s 10th place finish.

    Here’s the summary from GoJacks.com

STILLWATER, Okla. – The South Dakota State cross country teams leave this year's regional meet on a high note with two Jackrabbits being named All-Region honorees, as well as the men's team finishing fourth overall at the NCAA Midwest Regional meet— their best regional finish to date.

Anna Donnay finished 10th overall and first for the Jacks to earn All-Region honors with a time of 20:57.0. Donnay is the third Jack to ever earn the award and her 10th place finish ties her with Rachel King's 2017 performance for best finish by a Jackrabbit (male or female) at the Midwest Regional.

The women's team finished in 16th place in the 33-team field with 387 points.

Fans familiar with cross country strategy and scoring will understand the significance of running together — look at how little time separates our first and fifth men’s runners:

    Men's Individual Results:
    23. Micah Mather 31:31.0 (All-Region Honoree)
    28. Joseph Minor-Williams 31:38.9
    32. Chase Cayo 31:44.1
    40. Gabe Peters 31:53.2
    43. Thomas Breuckman 31:56.0
    70. Andrew Rush 32:24.0
    106. Lukas Nelson 33:02.6

in winning the conference title this season, our guys took the top six places!

Here are the individual places/time for the SDSU women — still impressive. Donnay’s performance is elite.

    69. Ellie Friesen 22:10.7
    94. Cailee Peterson 22:28.5

Thanks for the info - this is really impressive.

Where would have the men needed to place to get an auto-bid to nationals?

Top two teams in each of the nine regions advance to the NCAA National Meet. Additionally, there are 13 at-large team selections. From the NCAA website:
The top two finishers of each regional automatically qualify for the national championships, equating to 18 immediate team qualifiers. Four of the top individuals who do not finish on a qualifying team will also advance to the national championships. The remaining 13 at-large teams and two additional individuals will be selected by the NCAA DI Cross Country Subcommittee. A total of 255 participants will be at the national championships.

Here are the top two teams from each region:
    Great Lakes: Purdue; Notre Dame
    Mid-Atlantic: Villanova; Georgetown
    Midwest: Tulsa, Iowa State
    Mountain: Northern Arizona; Colorado
    Northeast: Harvard; Syracuse
    South: Ole Miss; Middle Tennessee
    South Central: Texas; Arkansas
    Southeast: Virginia; Virginia Tech
    West: Portland; Stanford

Here are the selection committee's "at large" selections:
Alabama; Boise State; BYU; Florida State; Furman; Indiana; Iona; Michigan; NC State; Oregon; Utah State; Washington.and Wisconsin.

The selection process is pretty accurate in Cross Country; but, if SDSU's men had advanced, they would beat some of the teams running in the national meet.
