  • GDT:Lamb Bonanza SDSU Jackrabbits vs ORU Golden Eagles @ Frost Arena

3-1 ORU is in a zone as they have a road win against Omaha and home wins against WIU & UND. Of course the zone is the defense employed to get teams to take those outside shots. That may not be a good idea as the Jackrabbits have averaged about 42% at long range. ORU has done well rebounding out of their zone which has created some one and done for offenses. Nzekwesi will be a load today as he scores 23 and grabs 10+ boards in Summit play. R-Fr Obanor 6'8" is gaining speed with 8 boards and 16 points in the Summit. Most of the rest will be guards as big man Chris Miller left the team at semester. Golden Eagles are averaging 80 in conference and allowing 78. They are 2-8 on the road this season which is not likely to change for the better today. Jackrabbits should be able to punch some holes and go over the top of zone. Go Jacks!!

Unfortunately, ORU lost returning PG RJ Fuqua and incoming freshman PG Kennedy Milton to injury prior to the beginning of the season. Then ORU's current starting PG Sam Kearns went down with a shoulder injury in the home game against WIU - leaving only Wichita St. grad transfer Kaenlen Malone as the lone guard that can advance the ball.

I would expect to see a fairly lopsided game with SDSU pressing for a majority of the game.

So am I to assume that overall depth will be a problem for ORU? Will they start to slow games down even more? I can't imagine that they would want to get into a footrace with SDSU
-South Dakotan by birth, a Jackrabbit by choice.

Not really sure. The depth isn't bad at shooting guard and forward but without a PG out there running the offense it might not matter too much. Everybody's just playing for 2nd until Daum graduates . Now we know what it was like for conference opponents with Caleb Green.

Pretty decent start for the Jacks. For those of you that like to opine about lack of defense: 7 points allowed in the first 8:30.

Also - welcome back Mike Daum!

Daum getting the ball more down low rather than on catching it high and having to drive to the basket. Seems to be working - 14 points and no fouls in 12 minutes.

Tevin King has to be one of the better rebounding guards in the country.

He’s like top 3-4 for rebounding for guards his 6’-2” and under. They’ve mentioned it in past games on Midco.

Jenkins gets his fair share as well for usually guarding wing players.

21 assists to 9 turnovers, 11 threes made, only 65 points allowed, no one in foul trouble and all of it in front of a good crowd. That’s a nice little Saturday!

IMO Arians had a great game. Asking him to guard the beast known as Nzekwesi is no small task and he did very well. He seems to be gaining confidence with every game.

Agreed. You can tell he's probably not going to be a dynamic scoring option, besides going off once in a while, but he is such a hard worker and does all the little things. Multiple times he got in on an offensive rebound and wouldn't be able to grab it, but did enough to tip it to another SDSU player. He's going to be a really good role player for the next 3 years.

No doubt about it, Arians is some of our future. Who ever found him deserves a bonus of some kind.

Hard to tell about the scoring part. With Daum, Jenkins and Flatten on the floor, he isn't exactly the first option when plays are run.

True, he may emerge as a consistent scoring option. It will be fun to watch him develop because he's already promising.
