  • Regional Training Center (RTC)

Regional Training Center deserves it's own thread. Some of this is a duplicate from a posting in an earlier post.

Regional Training Center is an important piece of the puzzle to the future success of Jackrabbit wrestling. It is a great training and recruiting tool. The local & regional community benefits. Coach Zeke Jones gives good talk about RTC's...

Regional Training Center (RTC) is essentially a USA Wrestling Santioned Training site. The site is currently our wrestling room on the East side of the Frost Arena. The new wrestling room when completed on the West side of Frost Arena will serve as the new RTC. USA Wrestling provides insurance for the site and for the USA Wrestling Wrestlers. A RTC is beneficial for a Division 1 program to allow the wrestlers train year round and the regions wrestlers whether youth or high school can also benefit from the training site. When you are allowed x amount of coaches in a University program, and RTC coach(es) (depends on how much money has been raised for the RTC program) can cross over and assist the NCAA University program, being that they are funded by the RTC.

"Essentially, the Regional Training Centers aren't directly tied to the university payroll. They have senior-level athletes and a coach that is separate from the university. They are paid by the RTC."

It has been shown that successful RTC program leads to successful NCAA program. Penn State is a good example.

The following are some good links that explore RTC's and the benefits.

        Re: Regional Training Center (RTC)

Let me clarify further. I've had a couple of people that may be confusing the New Wrestling Facility and RTC.

New wrestling facility requires donations. RTC also requires donations to establish and grow.

Is the RTC and Jackrabbit wrestling club the same thing? I don't know.

RTC is not dependant on a new facility. RTC simply utilizes our current facilities. RTC practices are scheduled around the Jackrabbit practices. In other words, not interferring with SDSU Wrestling schedule, but making use of the facility in the off hours.

The new practice room & facility will be created when the fundraising is complete. When that new practice room is available, RTC will utilize that site too.

SDSU Wrestling and RTC are independant of each other as entities, but they also benefit each other in a big way. There are obvious training benefits that go both ways.

RTC and Division 1 programs need each other to sustain high level success for the training benefits of facilities, access to coaches, high level training training partners (young and older pushing each other) & well funded programs can help assist wrestlers with their USA Wrestling expenses.

Hopefully, I didn't make this more confusing...

The thing nobody talks about is I think it provides loopholes for NCAA rules and IRS rules. Penn State has 2 RTC's, they have 6 million dollars in the bank. Iowa is the second largest with $700,000. Other Universities aren't close, they range from $400,000 to $10,000 in assets. How the rules get bent, I'm not sure. I can only speculate. Things that come to mind are potentially a college athletes parent may have a paid position in the RTC organization. Or maybe the athlete doesn't take a scholarship, but gets paid very well for training camp appearances by the RTC. Again, this is speculation on some very successful Big 10 programs.

I'd rather not speculate possible negative scenarios. RTC and Division 1 programs need each other to sustain high level success for the training benefits of facilities, access to coaches, high level training training partners (young and older pushing each other) & well funded programs can help assist wrestlers with their USA Wrestling expenses.

That part in bold sounds like trouble. Trouble we have never seen at SDSU. Reminds me of the movie BLUE CHIPS.
