  • Jake Wieneke in the Pros

I am really excited to get to the preseason and see Jake in a Vikings uniform. I hope he gets ample opportunity to show what he can do. He's going to need to make multiple splash plays in order to just get on the practice squad, let alone the active roster. I don't think there's much of a realistic chance of him making the active roster this year. However, the practice squad is a realistic possibility, but definitely not a guarantee, as the WR room is full of young talent. Here's a nice article talking about the Vikings WRs other than Thielen, Diggs, and Treadwell.

    https://purpleptsd.com/90-minnesota-...ide-receivers/

Unless Kendall Wright looks terrible, he'll be the 4th WR on the roster, then we're looking at one open spot on the active roster (could be two, but usually they only carry 6 WRs if one of them is a return specialist, and I'm thinking Hughes, the CB they drafted will take that role). I'm guessing either Coley or Jones will get that spot. Then the remaining WRs will be fighting for one, maybe two, WR spots on the practice squad. Imo, Tavarres King will be gone because at 28 he's too old to put on the practice squad, so Jake will be going against:

Coley or Jones (whichever one isn't on the active roster may get cut, as they've already had chances to shine)
Badet (speedy WR, but at 6'0" 172 lbs, he seems like a smaller version of what they already have in Diggs, Wright, and Coley)
Robertson (6'2" 210 lbs, not that impressive imo)
Beebe (another speedy WR, 5'10" 183 lbs, doesn't jump off the screen to me)
Zylstra (similar to Wieneke in stature at 6'3" 220 lbs., doesn't seem like he's as fast as Jake)

I think his biggest competition for the one or two practice squad spots would be Coley or Jones and Zylstra. Wieneke is actually the tallest WR on the roster at 6'4", which helps him a lot if the Vikings are looking to hang onto a tall WR with good hands and develop him. It also helps that his game is a lot like Thielen's in that he's not an athletic freak, but he'll beat you with route running, awareness, and great hands. They may look at Jake and think that there's a possibility of him turning into a Thielen type WR in a year or two. Of course I'm looking at all of this with blue and yellow glasses, but if he can come up with at least two splash plays and some other consistent play in the preseason, I think his chances of making the practice squad are pretty good. His chances of making the active roster are slim to none though.

However, this early roster projection does predict Jake as the 5th WR.

It was fun seeing Jake throw out the first pitch last night. Anyone else go and stick out the 2 hr delay?

I stuck around, but a 2 hour delay was nothing, as the Twins game I went to earlier this year had a 5 hour delay. I'd like to think I'm getting my money's worth, but having 7 extra hours to drink at a MLB stadium is brutal on the bank account.
If you think nobody cares about you, try missing a couple of payments.

So true... I wish I would have stayed downtown until 9.

I was there, too! (You can actually see me in this picture.) It was great seeing so many Jacks fans in one place outside Brookings and nice to see some familiar faces again. Definitely hope they do it again next year. The 2 hour wait was certainly worth it!

Section 334 for my family and me. I was getting nervous checking tweets regarding delay, but I got more optimistic after Twins president said he was confident they'd get the game in (and Bison and 'Yote fans provided some of their version of humor saying a rain delay during Jacks Night was par for the course). It was awesome having Jake toss the first pitch.

Also agree with Cappin's earlier post in that I really hope Jake makes final cuts and sticks with Vikes.

Re: Jake Wieneke - Vikings Hopeful

I am a huge Vikings fan and I've never been this excited for the Vikings preseason. I really feel like if Jake gets enough opportunities in games, he will shine and he will make a practice squad (if not the Vikings, for sure someone else). The problem is getting opportunities is going to be very difficult, as the Vikings have a very crowded WR room, and for good reason, as they really only have 3 for sure WRs that are going to make the active roster. They are looking for guys to fill the 4 and 5 spot, and someone else to develop for the future. My worry is that QBs won't give him chances to go and win balls. Jake thrives on situations where he's tightly covered and the QB still throws it. Backup NFL QBs, like the ones Jake will be playing with, are going to be very careful with the ball because they're auditioning for the #2 QB spot, so they don't want to risk an INT on a tightly covered UDFA. I hope I'm wrong, but that's my concern.

Jake will earn his spot via his performance in practice. If he is able to show that his talent for winning those 50/50 balls has carried over into the NFL, then he will get a spot. What I want to see from him in-game is the ability to fight off press coverage.

^this, this is the single biggest thing for him to overcome to make a roster. Plenty of great receivers weren't considered burners yet ran great routes, got off the press and had great hands. Jake has tremendous gifts and will do well if he can get off the press, because we all know he won't be in motion half the time in the NFL.

Was that article written by an actual sports writer, or just some dude with a blog? That was a tough read to get through. Like, no joke, most people on this forum are better writers than that dude.

Looks like he's a young writer that contributes to the SB Nation Vikings-centric Daily Norseman blog. "I've been a Vikings fan basically my whole life. I'm currently going to school at the University of Montana for Journalism."
