  • 2018 Summit League Results

Got tired of reading the Opening Day thread to follow what's happening. Maybe a change of threads will help this baseball season move along.

As of April 30th, the Jackrabbits are 12-24 overall, but 10-8 in Summit League play. (Going only 2-16 in non-league games was painful!)

In Summit League games, the Jacks have gone 1-5 versus Oral Bob and 9-3 against the rest of the league. If we defend well in home games down the stretch, we should be in solid position for 2nd in the Summit. We host Omaha and Western Illinois for three game weekend series before ending the season with three games in Fargo. If we win 16 games in league play going into the Summit League Championships, we should enter the tournament as the #2 seed. Top four teams qualify for the double-elimination bracket.

Playing in Brookings has been a scarce commodity. Nine home games were either cancelled or moved because of weather or poor field conditions.
    • SDSU has canceled three home games this year. (Games vs Dakota State, Dakota Wesleyan and Creighton.)
    • Weather conditions moved our home series versus NDSU to Sioux Falls. The final game of that series was also cancelled due to weather.
    • The home series against Oral Roberts was moved to Omaha/Council Bluffs because of poor field conditions.

Do they use field turf for baseball or do they still let baseball play on real grass?

some places (Yankton and Augie I believe) have artificial infields. I don't know Brookings field problems well enough to know if that would help.

        Zim's take on it:

@argusmattz It'd cost 'em over a million bucks, but if SDSU can build a turf baseball field someday it'd be worth it. Augustana has played 13 home games this year, not to mention made money charging other schools to play there.

I hated field turf but in Brookings it would probably be a good idea. Same for the softball field. The issue is that you’ll need to replace it. Gets spendy. The grounds crew didn’t need to do much this year.

Nice weekend for the Rabbits. Swept UNO by scores of 5-4, 14-4, and 8-6.

Oral Roberts continued their torrid pace as they swept NDSU. ORU is 13-1 since losing to Oklahoma on April 11th. Their only loss is to SDSU during that stretch. Two of those wins are against Oklahoma State, who was ranked as high as 12th when they beat them last.

Western Illinois comes to Brookings this weekend after sweeping Fort Wayne.

Can't count this team out. The record doesn't look good but they have been battle tested this year and it's starting to show. Non-conference was brutal this year. I'm sure many here aren't college baseball junkies but Austin Peay and Bradley are good teams. Minnesota leads the big ten. SEMO is having a good year and we took 2 of 3 from them. Even Air Force and UNC are having good seasons. They played a lot of close games early and couldn't pull them out. The record could look much different with a few breaks in the early going.

Hopefully we can stay hot into the tournament and pull off the upset of ORU. They need to lose in the tournament someday, might as well be this year.

The current standings with two weeks to go.

                ORU 19-5
                SDSU 13-8
                W Ill 10-10
                Oma 9-12
                NDSU 9-13
                FW 6-18

Upcoming series for SDSU are against Western Illinois and at NDSU.
ORU hosts Omaha and at FW.
Western Illinois travels to SDSU and at Omaha.
Omaha is at ORU and hosts Western Illinois.
                NDSU hosts FW and SDSU.

I don't expect #1 and #2 to change, but the battle for the fourth and final spot in the Summit tourney. I expect that Omaha and Fort Wayne will be left out at the end of the season.

                  Re: 2018 Summit League Results

It has been really nice to see the team bounce back after the tough start to the season and yes the schedule had something to do with that. Not only the quality of opponents, but the travel as well.

When looking at Oral Roberts schedule, you have to come away impressed with what they've done this year. They are 3-4 against top 25 teams and have an 11-10 record in non-conference. Their non-conference opponents have a 0.558 winning percentage. It helps that they've had better weather to play. They've only had three postponed games and one canceled game that all happened in February.

I'm not a big gambler, but it would be an easy bet on ORU coming out of the Summit for the NCAA tourney. The toughest thing for them down the stretch is the number of games they are playing. They have 15 games in 22 days, including non-conference opponents of Oklahoma State, Wichita State, and Purdue. They are 7-0 in the first half of that closing schedule. Maybe they won't have enough arms left to throw when the top four play in Tulsa on May 23rd.

The spring weather has been a disaster. Worst I can ever remember. Put their schedule in these terms. 3 home games and 39 games played. That would be like asking our football team to play one home in a 13 game schedule. With that being said the team is playing their best baseball of season. Big sweep of Omaha last weekend. Mid week game in Witchita and back home for Western this weekend. Keep it rolling Rabbits!

                    Go Rabbits!

ORU is always so tough to beat because of the depth of their arms. It really is impressive how deep their staff is every year for a mid major. Walton was one of the premier pitching coaches in the country so it wasn't surprising when he was there. I thought things might be different when he left but the pitching tradition just keeps rolling. They will be firing on all cylinders come tournament time but a couple good breaks and someone can still take them down.

Check out the 2013 season. It was equally as bad if not worse and it turned out OK.

These guys need to figure out how to finish a game. Three straight blown leads in a row vs ndsu.

Jacks play in SLT championship today. Need to win 2 against ORU for the auto bid. Tall task but ORU has looked beatable in this tournament. Jacks put up enough runs to win in game 1 but couldn't hold ORU offense down. Bison had a lead going into the 7th but ORU put up a 5 spot to rally past them. Jacks have eliminated western and ndsu in their other 2 games.

Can't count our guys out but ORU is definitely in the drivers seat

Season over. The program is good and pointed in the right direction.
