      Re: Iowa State

Iowa State is young, and some of that youth can make some noise. They lost one of their top talents when Kanen Storr left the team last week. Storr was one of their highest ranked recruits in the last two years, but he must not have fit in the locker room. As it turns out, they moved up Ian Parker from 133 and he responded by beating a two-time qualifier for the Sooners and followed that up with a win over two-time national champion Dean Heil from Oklahoma State!

Here is a look at the Cyclones expected lineup:

      125 Sinjin Briggs Fr. Ames, Iowa. 1-9 / 0-7
133 Markus Simmons RSo. Broken Arrow, Okla. 19-11 / 2-4
      141 #15/18/17 ranked, Ian Parker RFr. Saint Johns, Mich. 17-6 / 5-3
      149 #18 ranked, Jarrett Degen RFr. Belgrade, Mont. 15-5 / 8-2
      157 Chase Straw RSo. Independence, Iowa 14-9 / 7-5
      165 Brady Jennings RSo. Osage, Iowa 13-8 / 0-2
or Skyler St. John RJr. Cedar Rapids, Iowa. 6-7 / 0-3
      174 Danny Bush RJr. Davenport, Iowa 13-11 / 2-4
or Hank Swalla RSo. Ames, Iowa 6-7 / 1-3
      184 Dane Pestano RSr. Waimanalo, Hawaii 16-8 / 8-4
      197 Sam Colbray RFr. Hermiston, Ore. 11-10 / 5-5
      285 Marcus Harrington RJr. Waterloo, Iowa 17-9 / 8-3

      Preview
125 - #20 Connor Brown should dominate Sinjin Briggs who has a 1-9 record. Briggs has lost by major (2), technical fall (5), and pin (1) in his last eight matches.
133 - #1 Seth Gross should easily win, but he will be facing a talented RS sophomore in Markus Simmons. Simmons has the most wins on the season of any Cyclone at 19, but he was wrestling in tournaments only until last week when Parker moved up to 141 lbs.
141 - Henry Pohlmeyer will be in a dog fight with #15 Ian Parker. Parker is the Big 12 wrestler of the week after upsetting 2x national champion Dean Heil. Both beat Longo from the Sooners last week. Parker should be favored, but don't rule out Henry.
149 - Colten Carlson will have his hands full with #18 Jarret Degen. Both lost to OU's Davion Jefferies last week. Degen sports a 15-5 record and cracked the polls this week at #18.
157 - #16 Luke Zilverberg will be favored, but Chase Straw is 5-1 versus Big 12 competition. Both had 1 point wins over Justin Thomas of OU last week.
165 - Logan Peterson and Brady Jennings have similar records and both were dominated by Barnes of Oklahoma last week.
174 - #9 David Kocer needs to rebound after losing his last two matches to ranked opponents. The Cyclones' Danny Bush is no push over. Both Kocer and Bush lost close matches to #14 Mejias of the Sooners last week.
184 - Martin Mueller and Dane Pestano should be a good matchup. Pestano is 16-8 overall and 4-3 vs Big 12 foes. In three common opponents, the difference is Mueller's fall over Polson from Wyoming, Pestano lost 5-4 to Polson.
197 - #11 Nate Rotert should easily win vs. Sam Colbray who wins as many as he loses.
285 - Alex Macki and Marcus Harrington bring different styles to the mat, but Harrington sports a better record and he's picked up momentum. Harrington beat out Gannon Gremmel for ISU, Gremmel owns a major over Macki at the Midlands.

The Cyclones are improved, but the Jackrabbits should win easily. Projected score 27 - 12

          Re: Iowa State

I'm a former basketball player, but how can you not get Jacked when you consider what Bono's crew has done for our wrestling program!

Tonight I hope to watch a kid who may be a future Jackrabbit. Phillip Moomey is one of the best wrestlers regardless of weight in Nebraska. His Kearney team is wrestling Grand Island tonight on the same floor where the University of Nebraska, Kearney will square off against Central Oklahoma at Kearney High School. This is a new tradition that was started a few years ago and has created lots of excitement for wrestling in Nebraska. Moomey was selected as the Adidas Wrestling High School Wrestler of the Week yesterday. He's been on fire this year since his breakout performance in Fargo last summer. His only loss this season was to Penn State commit Brody Teske from Fort Dodge, Iowa, 7-5. Moomey's a junior and has numerous programs looking at him, but he'd fit in awfully well in Brookings!

They are going to reward 1 student who attends the Iowa St. dual with a tuition grant. For every student that attends the dual $2 will go into the grant.

              Re: Iowa State

Thanks for the match-by-match write-up, that will make watching much more interesting. The TV announcers for the OU dual did a nice job of giving some info about the wrestlers in each match while they wrestled. That's not so much the case with the broadcast from Brookings, that seems to focus primarily on play-by-play.

I hope the students jump all over that tuition promo. They're bound to have a good time if they show up. Right now I'm trying to come up with some way to justify 4 hours of driving (most likely with my 3-year old daughter) to catch a 90-minute match. I'd love to be there.

Now up to $4/student with another donor stepping up. So if 1000 students show up, one student will win $4000 for their Spring Semester tuition.

This is my first year doing the commentary/play by play, any suggestions you guys can offer would be greatly appreciated.

You’re enthusiasm on the call is awesome and really ramps up the excitement during the match. When things get tight the crowd starts to roar and you get fired up - it’s easy to get swept up in it at home. Good stuff, don’t change.

Since you asked for input.... Bono and company (as well as Flowrestling) are clearly seeking new fans like myself. It would be helpful to spend some of the first period on the bigger picture so us new fans can get more out of the match and duel. Who’s favored, records, rankings, strategy, history, pivotal matches, recruiting stories, comments on the crowd or share things you might have picked up talking to the team or coaches. Paint the picture, if you will. The fans this program wants to add have some catching up to do.

Again, thanks for doing a good job and also for reading a few comments from a newbie. With a little more scheming I’ll see the match in person tomorrow. It will involve taking the whole family and require an in-kind trip to the Children’s Museum that will mean I’ll miss most of the Super Bowl, but I’ll take it.
