    Default 2017 Roster

Is it too early for a two-deep for next year?

    Thoughts:
SDSU generally likes a safety/linebacker hybrid in one of their OLB spots and with the emergence of Balster, I wonder if they don't move Farina into that Jimmy Rodgers/Dallas Brown role next year. He's not afraid to hit.

Some young players that didn't make the two deep that could flash:
    RFR WR - Paddy Devlin
FR - OLB - Noah Urbanek
    RFR DB - Monte McGary
    RFR DB - Joshua Manchigiah
    RFR DE - Kaden Roy
    RFR LB - Kyle Tuttle
    SO RB - Mikey Daniel
    RFR RB - Tolu Ogunrinde
    RFR OLB - Logan Backhaus

    ALL CAPS = Returning Starter
    * = All Conference Selection

    OFFENSE (10 of 11 Back)

    QB1 - JR CHRISTION*
    QB2 - RFR Nelson

    RB1 - SR MENGARELLI*
    RB2 - JR Wallace

    FB1 - SR LOUSCHER
    FB2 - SO Sellers

    WR1 - SR WIENEKE*
    WR1 - JR Wilde

    WR2 - SO ANDERSON
    WR2 - SO Jacob Brown

    WR3 - SO LEWIS
    WR3 - RFR Cade Johnson

    TE - SR GOEDERT*
    TE - SO Steckman

    LT - SR HARMON*
    LT - JR Carbis

    LG - SR PUPUNGATOA
    LG - SO DeVoe

    C - SR OHNESORGE*
    C - JR Weir

    RG - JR CLARK
    RG - SO DeVoe

    RT - SO Genant
    RT - JR Carbis

    DEFENSE (7 of 11 back)

    LDE - JR Kern
    LDE - SO Smenda

    RDE - SO EARITH
    RDE - JR Basaniak

    DT1 - SR SOULEK*
    DT1 - RFR Elijah Wilson

    DT2 - JR Whitsell
    DT2 - RFR Stacker

    ROLB - SR FARINA
    ROLB - RFR Blair Mulholland

    MLB - SO ROZEBOOM*
    MLB - JR Cox

    LOLB - SO Harms
    LOLB - SO Workman

    LCB - JR BROWN
    LCB - SO Mosley

    RCB - SR WASHINGTON
    RCB - SO Harris

    FS - SR BALSTER
    FS - SO Brandon Thomas

    SS - JR Slade
    SS - SO Lorenzo Williams

SPECIAL TEAMS (2 of 3 back)

Sam Koob has 1 yr remaining but Stig has said he is going to forego that year because he is in last year of his Pharmacy degree which are in Sioux Falls (clinicals).

I recall Stig making that statement about Koob at the end of the season. It would be impossible to play football while living and attending class in Sioux Falls.

I thought Koob showed constant improvement through his career and it would have been nice to have him next season.

Of course, there is the example of Charles Jefferson (played by Forest Whitaker) in the 80's film "Fast Times at Ridgmont High". For those not familiar with that movie: Jefferson was a standout football player for Ridgmont who was rumored to not actually attend school and only fly in to town for games.

Goes to show that there is life after football. Best wishes to Sam Koob and his pursuit of happiness in the pharmacy field. Many great opportunities besides the corner drug store.

I hope we can work Dalton Cox, Eric Klesinschmidt, and Jessup Workman into the mix at LB. Cox is a good player and seems to always be in the right spot when he's on the field. The other two made a lot of plays, along with Harms, on special teams this season. I'm surprised you have Mullholland on this depth chart as I have heard better things about Logan Backus's performance this fall. I wouldn't be shocked if they moved Farina or Slade to OLB. It'd be nice to get all three safeties on the field as they all have talent, especially in passing situations.

Whoever is playing on the defensive line I hope they come out more aggressive and work to penetrate instead of just eating up blocks. I know that is our philosophy, but I hate it!

At corner, there is a lot of opportunity for growth and playing time for our young corners. I don't think any of the three (Brown, Washington, Mosley) are guaranteed their spot in the rotation again. Yes, they improved throughout last season but there was still too many mental errors.
Jackrabbits: Long ears, strong hind legs, gritty, relentless, fearless.

I know nothing about DT Stacker, but toward the end of this season Hildahl was getting some reps at DT.

Stacker is a big man! HAHA. I'm interested to see what he looks like after a spring/summer of weight lifting.

I totally missed Backhaus. I only put Mulholland as a #2 at LOLB because his size seems to fit that smaller linebacker spot. With them needing to replace 2 of the 3 LB spots and with several unknown players, it's really anyone's guess how it shakes out. We will probably know more after spring ball.

It would nice to see one of the DE's create some pressure on the outside with speed. I moved Elijah Wilson from DE to DT, but he certainly might stay at DE. He was pretty well thought of when he signed last year. I don't have any doubts that Soulek will provide pressure from the inside or eat up double teams to free other players.

    You got the Safeties in the wrong positions;

    Balster OLB
    Farina SS
    Slade FS

There was talk of these changes towards the end of last year, and by the looks of it, it makes really good sense!!!

Two long-snappers that are probably vying for a starting spot are Seth Gutzmer (Columbus, NE) and Bradey Sorenson (Yankton).
