Coach Wood has the team going in the right direction. There hasn't been a lot to cheer about in softball for many years. Good for the players and the coaches.

If you look at the schedule/results info, they were very competitive in a lot of their losses this year against some really good competition.I'm impressed with the job that coach Wood and staff have done in such a short time

Softball has all 6 teams in post season. Why does baseball only do top 4?

There are 7 teams in the conference in softball, so one stays home. I'm not sure why the men use a four-team championship, but it has been that way since we joined the Summit (Mid-Continent). At the time we came into the league, along with NDSU, the league was about to lose its auto bid, and our addition to the league took away that problem. That may be why they were at 4 at that time and have not changed.

I know in years past there were only 5 eligible teams in the conference with baseball (ORU, IPFW, WIU, SDSU, NDSU). With Omaha there are now 6 teams, so maybe they will up the number.

The difference in the way the two sports approach pitching is probably a major reason. A softball pitcher can throw multiple games over a two or three day tournament, while baseball starting pitchers have pitch count limits which basically allows them to pitch once in the tournament. Having a six team double elim baseball tournament would add at least one, if not two, days to the tournament and most mid-major pitching staffs don't have the starting pitching depth to handle that.
