    Re: New wrestlers

The relatively easy answer is that a lot of the freshmen that enroll have little or no scholarship help. That leads to a big workout room, but at the end of a long, hard (workout) season, and you are probably not going to make it to wrestle at your weight, a lot of students don't return. We have 28 wrestlers on this year's squad for 10 starting positions. But earlier we had some 34 or so wrestlers out for the squad. It is a tough sport (and as tough as anywhere in the country under Chris, Jon, AJ and Zach) which takes its toll from year to year. We had a wrestler leave the team at season's end last year and go elsewhere, and when asked why he transferred from SDSU, he noted "we had to work to hard". In that case, better to go elsewhere or drop out.

Also note, our other 2018 verbal from Owatanna, MN, Peyton Robb, recently defeated Alex Lloyd at the MN Christmas tournament. Doesn't look like he's ranked in any of these rankings, but probably should be. Close match, both are studs. Future of SDSU wrestling looks bright.

                      Re: New wrestlers

Good photo of three of our future Jackrabbits and one more potential recruit at the NDSU dual with the coaching staff. From left to right: Peyton Robb (verbal), Alex Lloyd (verbal), Jared Franek, and Sam Grove (signed). Franek is a 3 time ND state champion and Junior at West Fargo HS. Won his third championship this past weekend at 152lbs. Would be a great get if we could sign him from NDSU's backyard. Two of his current teammates, Brandon Metz and Jesse Shearer are currently signed to wrestle with the Bison next year. Robb, Lloyd and Franek are all Juniors and all about the same size, but could potentially project to 149, 157 and 165 depending on how they grow the next 2-3 years.

He is just a Jr so I don't think he has made a decision yet. His brother was on the SDSU team a few years back.

Even my kid said to me the other day he thinks he wants to play basketball, because you don't sweat as much. He's 9. Wrestling is a punishing sport with little glory. It takes a mindset like no other. And if you see you aren't going to make the team.....well, better move on. There are only so many slots, and of those slots you as a wrestler can maybe go up or down with a chance at 3 or 4 of them.
