  • Re: Blake Treinen

Blake wants 6.4M, the A's are offering 5.6M. Interesting the number of big names that haven't settled and will most likely go to a hearing. I'm guessing since the MLBPA screwed up the last CBA and guys aren't getting the big free agent deals anymore, they are telling the big names to shoot for the moon in arbitration. I hope the arbitration panels stick it to the owners.

I had someone ask the other day about arbitration of salary disputes in major league baseball vs. arbitration in other civil disputes. Generally speaking, in Major League Baseball salary arbitration, both sides present their offers to the arbitrator and the arbitrator picks one. In common arbitration of civil disputes, the arbitrator will determine the monetary award and is not bound to accept or reject the position of either side. In common arbitration, the arbitrator can decide a case with an award in between the positions stated by the parties or go outside the positions stated by the parties.

In baseball arbitration, the parties have to come in with their pencil's sharpened. If the information reported in this thread is accurate, Blake should end up with either $5.6 million or $6.4 million. So, just loose pocket change of $800,000 at risk.

      Go Blake!

Added: Some years back, I ran into a lawyer with roots in Sisseton, SD. He was a Major League Baseball arbitrator. He had some good stories.

You nailed it. 3 person arbitration panel and they pick one or the other, no in between. Basically the players side talks about how great he is, and the team talks about how bad he is. Then they each get rebuttals and the panel decides. Not exactly for the faint of heart. Teams have been known to not try to take the "soft" players to a hearing because of the nature of it.

Does the played typically attend or is that not public information? May be hard for a talented athlete hear his employer attempt to minimize his worth!

Which is exactly why teams and players want to avoid arbitration if at all possible. It can foster hard feelings.

That would be very thoughtful on Blakes behalf, but I would wait for the cash to be in the bank.

Yes the player is always there with his reps and reps from the players union. The team has their GM and some other front office along with reps from MLB. Here's a good example why many teams don't want to take certain players through the process.

Huge win for the players. This was actually one of the more important arbitration cases according to this

                        • Blake closed it out Sunday night for the Dodgers....Dodgers now up 3-2. Certainly possible to see Blake in the same position in the next game for all the marbles.

                          • Congrats to Blake for winning the World Series! He recorded 5 strikeouts and a save in his 3 appearances. Pretty cool to see SDSU alums be apart of winning the World Series and Super Bowl in the last few years.
