  • Very good break for Blake Treinen

The Nationals' trade with the Tigers today means there is a decent chance a second Jack alum could be making his MLB debut sooner rather than later.

The Nats traded Steve Lombardozzi and two of their top younger pitching prospects - Ian Krol and Robbie Ray - for Doug Fister. The Nats' have a lot of pitching in the low minors, but not a lot of guys considered nearing Major League readiness. Before this trade, that list iincluded Blake Treinen. After the trade, Treinen stands out even more as a top prospect.

Treinen had a pretty good season on the same AA team as these two guys they traded today. The Nats have a tendency to keep their better prospects nearby at Harrisburg, Pa., where Treinen was. He was out with some shoulder soreness for part of the season but the Nats like his power arm.

Here is a recent Nats baseball blog post mentioning Treinen as a possible bullpen guy next year. Note he is mentioned as one of the top power arms in the organizations.

And the earlier post is borne out. Washington Post reporting that Blake Treinen is getting a spring training invite with the Nationals. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/...blake-treinen/

Really happy for Blake and hoping he can hang in there and join Caleb in the majors. Thanks NVJ for keeping us in the loop on Treinen.

More good news for Treinen. The Nats yesterday traded another pitcher roughly on his level in the organization, a kid who would have competed with Treinen for either a ML roster spot or as a starter at their AAA organization. Latest Nats' discussion boards have Treinen being one of the club's starters at AAA, although they give him an outside chance at making the ML club as a middle reliever. Lot depends on the spring. His new manager is an intense guy who likes straightforward competitors.

Good write up on Blake Treinen and him impressing the new Nationals manager Matt Williams.

Willliams is an intense manager. I don't know Treinen's makeup but if he comes in and battles for the job and impresses, I would not be surprised Willliams would take a flyer on this young kid. Their other bullpen sinkerballer, is an absolute dunderhead - broke his pitching hand last year by trying to punch a wall with his pitching hand after a bad outing. Treinen also tjhrows harder than this guy. Ryan Matheus. Going to be fun to watch.

Pretty bad outing for Treinent for Nats today. He and Josh Roenicke, who the Nats got from the Twins, got shelled in the middle innings today. Not a pretty line. Treinen gave up 6 runs, 4 earned, in 1 inning. Did have two strikeouts.

Nats cut several pitchers yesterday that were on Treinen's level last year. Lots of good things being said about his sinker in camp. I would not be surprised to see him in the Bigs this year.

Re: Very good break for Blake Treinen

Treinen closed out game for Nats today with about as an efficient of line as you can find. 5 pitches, 5 strikes, one strikeout, one inning pitched.

I've seen some good comments about Treinen in camp from the media. I've read some tweets saying he has an outside shot at the 5th starter job (though him not being on the 40 man roster makes it highly unlikely). His fastball is keeping velocity, reportedly he hit 101 last September in a playoff outing, his other pitches have improved. Assuming he stays healthy and pitches well, he should get a call up this year at some time.

Fifth starter is between Roark and Jordon. If Treinen makes it it will be in pen. There are 21 pitchers left in camp for probably 12 spots.

This piece and the comments from opposing scouts seem to indicate that Treinen has a great MLB future. Talked to a friend who covers the Nats and he thinks there is a good chance Treinen is in the Nats bullpen on Opening Day. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/...city-presence/

Looks like Blake will have to wait just a bit longer to make the big club. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/...ationals-camp/

That's disappointing but the coaching staff's comments are encouraging...hoping to see Blake in the bigs by mid-season.
