If scholarships had been offered to the NW Iowa athletes you identify, are you certain they would have accepted them?

That's a good question. Case in point, in Bulldogs list he says Ron Nash could have been a scholly player at SDSU. Yes he could have and was offered, but yet this young man didn't even make a visit to Brookings and one of HS teammates signed here. Another case, Brandon Snyder turned down an offer from NDSU to walk-on at Iowa. Would he have picked SDSU if offered over Iowa, who knows.

Until USD kicks our butts two years in a row, I going to give our staff a vote of confidence in their recruiting choices. HS coaches play a part in kids getting scholarships, by help in putting videos together to send to various institutions. If we never get those videos, how can one know about these kids?

I know there are all kinds of scouting groups who put these videos together and even if these guys don't help out promoting, how can we possibly know about them? I am 22 miles west of Brookings, and have no relatives that I know about in Lyons County, Iowa. I like to spend a few bucks at casinos, and have yet to travel Great Falls, since they are sucking money out of South Dakota, I don't see any need of me contributing to this lost cause.

Lets face it, there are more candidates to choose from than there are scholarships to hand out.

Two questions for people to ponder which may help frame the local/national recruiting discussion:

What defines a successful recruit?

How much risk do coaches take with each scholarship to meet the definition above?

I'm not going to pretend to have the answers, but in order to find the right answers, I think one first needs to ask the right questions.

recruits should not be graded until their 3rd year in the program. There have been recruits who I felt would be great players who fizzled out and those who I thought was a mistake who contributed right away. So its hard to say what is a successful recruit

However I feel you have to look at a few things

1. qualifying academically- most crucial part of it. If they can't make it in the classroom it doesn't matter how good they are

2. skill set/size is that of a D-I athlete. Yes there are small not great athletes who become successful D-I players, but the odds are if you are not D-I size, or D-I athletic your chances are not great. Its the whole you can't coach size argument.

3. The mentality of the recruit. This one is hard, there have been some guys on SDSU's roster that I know, who I said no way they will make it and they become 3-4 year starters. But its the mentality that the recruit will come in and work hard, do the stuff required to become a solid player for the team. Not pout when he isn't starting his first year, be at the meetings, workouts, practices, etc. This is one of those that you never know until the recruit is on campus.

So I look at those 3 things when looking at recruits, I'm sure the coaches do as well. But again its not rocket science. There are guys who just can't cut it, guys who are not athletic enough, and those who don't want it enough. And until they are on campus you do not know for sure.

joeboo22 - Excellent reply. It sounds like you are much closer to SDSU's program than most posters. Could you expand on a few things for me?

Academics - In evaluating recruits, is this simply pass/fail? I love seeing Academic All-Americans, but I understand that we will not have a team full of them.

Risk - How do coaches evaluate risk on a given recruit? Examples: players will skills but questionable commitment, small-school kids with questionable competition levels, or late-maturing kids with break-out senior seasons/games.

3rd year Evaluation - In the average fans' mind, successful recruit = starter. It's obvious that this is not possible for everyone. Assuming a player is still with the program, what do the coaches deem as successful at this stage of the game?

The QB depth chart will probably be Sumner (SR), Douglas(rFR), Lujan (SO), and Little (Hopefully redshirts). Douglass will be the only scholarship QB getting reps this Spring due to Sumner's surgery.

Yup...according to T.V., Finnes and Douglas stand to get the bulk of the reps in spring ball while Sumner recovers from shoulder surgery...

That is the first I have heard Publicly about Austins shoulder. A month and a half ago I had heard that he had a torn labrum all last year and was going to have surgery on it I heard it from someone that seemed to be a reliable source, and asked others here about in in PM's as I didn't want to get accused of spreading rumors. Does anybody know any more?

JJ Hejna might opt for a track scholarship offer over walking on he won the state high jump with a 6' 8 1/4" jump. Quite a jump for a 6' 4" 225 lb kid
