FAYETTE, Iowa — Ashley Kalina’s grand slam in the sixth propelled South Dakota State to an 18-1 victory over Upper Iowa in game one, and an infield single by Teresa Howell provided the only run in the nitecap as the Jacks swept a softball doubleheader from Upper Iowa Saturday.
In the opener, the Jacks jumped ahead with two second inning runs. After loading the bases, Ali Adair grounded out to short, plating Kiley Schwedhelm. Stacey Evans followed with a sacrifice fly to left, allowing Steph Kuhl to score.
SDSU broke the game open in the third, scoring seven runs, aided by three Upper Iowa errors. Kalina reached on an error to lead off the inning. Tessie Winterton walked and Kassy Hernandez singled to load the bases for Schwedhelm, whose sacrifice fly was dropped, plating two runs. Kuhl followed that with a two-run double to right-center. Evans and Winterton each added run-scoring singles, and Lindsay Reiter’s sacrifice fly scored the other Jackrabbit run in the inning.
In the fourth, SDSU used three straight singles and an error to start the inning. After an RBI single by Evans, Reiter bounced into a fielder’s choice before Kalina had her only hit, a grand slam, to put SDSU up 15-0.
Upper Iowa scored a run in its’ half of the fourth before the Jacks finished out the scoring with three fifth inning runs. Evans and Winterton each had RBI singles in the inning.
Jordan Bottorff tossed a complete game four-hitter, walking three batters in the fourth for the only Upper Iowa run. She improved her record to 7-8.
After pounding out 19 hits in the opener, SDSU managed only eight in the nitecap, pushing across a run in the seventh for a 1-0 victory.
Reiter started off the seventh with a single, moving up to second on a stolen base. Kalina singled, and advanced to second when a throw home held Reiter at third. Following a failed bunt opportunity, Hernandez reached on a fielder’s choice in which everyone was safe, loading the bases. After a strikeout, it was Howell’s two-out infield hit that gave the Jacks their run.
Upper Iowa’s Katie Kilburg led off the bottom of the seventh with a double, but Jackrabbit reliever Schwedhelm struck out two batters, and negotiated a grounder back to her, preserving the one-run win.
Schwedhelm was the winning pitcher in relief, allowing just two hits over five innings of work. Westendorf started the contest, throwing two innings before being relieved.
With the sweep, SDSU improves to 26-25, while Upper Iowa dropped to 14-23.
The Jacks finish the road trip Sunday in Iowa City, taking on the Iowa. The Hawkeyes, currently third in the Big Ten standings, defeated SDSU 9-0 in five innings earlier this year.
