Jacks finalize 2005 volleyball roster
Five standout high school volleyball players have been accepted for admission to South Dakota State University and plan to further their athletic careers at the Division I level with the Jackrabbit volleyball program.
Committing to the Jackrabbits recently were:
• Rachel Dahl, 5-8, defensive specialist/libero, Brookings;
• Kathleen Hruska, 6-1, middle hitter, Sioux Falls;
• Lisa Hylle, 6-3, middle hitter, Pierre;
• Elise In’t Veld, 6-1, middle hitter, Belle Fourche, and
• Justine Olson, 5-7, defensive specialist/libero, Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Dahl is expected to contribute in the back row for the Jackrabbits as she moves across town from Brookings High School to SDSU. The 2004 Brookings Register Player of the Year, Dahl was a first-team all-Eastern South Dakota selection and second-team all-state pick. She also lettered in basketball and track and was a member of Brookings’ state championship basketball team in 2004.
Hruska earned South Dakota Gatorade Player of the Year honors in 2004 after leading Roosevelt High School to a third-place finish at the Class AA state tournament. A four-time all-conference honoree, she earned all-state honors three times. Her extensive club experience includes stints with High Plains Elite and the Southwest Minnesota Juniors, the latter of which has qualified for the USA Volleyball Junior National Championships. Hruska also lettered in basketball three times.
Hylle will give the Jackrabbits added size in the front row. Her accolades included earning all-Eastern South Dakota honors in 2004, as well as academic all-state and National Honor Society recognition.
In’t Veld will join the Jackrabbit program after an outstanding all-around prep career at Belle Fourche High School, for which she was an academic all-state selection in three sports. A three all-Black Hills Conference selection in volleyball, she earned second-team all-state honors as a junior and first-team honors as a senior. In’t Veld also has been selected to represent the North team in the South Dakota All-Star match next month in Aberdeen. In addition, In’t Veld earned all-conference honors twice in basketball and placed in the top 20 at the Class A state golf tournament three times.
Olson figures to be in the mix in the back row for the Jackrabbits after earning all-conference honors each of her last two seasons at St. Albert High School in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She gained further playing experience with the Nebraska Elite and Third Degree club teams, while also competing in basketball and track
The five new additions fill out a roster of 19 players, including nine returning letterwinners from the 2004 team that compiled a 22-12 record in its inaugural season of Division I action under the direction of head coach Andrew Palileo. The players are expected to report to fall camp on Aug. 9, and open the season Aug. 26-27 with four matches at the Oregon Kickoff Classic. SDSU is slated to play Portland State (Ore.) and Gonzaga (Wash.) on Aug. 26, before meeting Eastern Washington and host Oregon on Aug. 27.
