Lowery leads Jackrabbit men to Dragon Open win

GLYNDON, Minn. — Brad Lowery marked his return to the Jackrabbit lineup after sitting out the 2004 season by taking individual honors as the South Dakota State University men's cross country team claimed the team title at the season-opening Dragon Open.

Lowery, a senior from Pierre, crossed the finish line in a time of 26 minutes, 18.35 seconds. In all, SDSU runners claimed 11 of the top 20 spots in the 8,000-meter race, including top-10 finishes by Chris Gruenhagen (sixth, 26:42.66), Ricky Furseth (seventh, 26:43.74) and Andrew Van Nurden (10th, 26:51.83).

SDSU edged North Dakota State for the team title, 29 to 38. Minnesota State, Moorhead was a distant third with 111 points, with Concordia (Moorhead) rounding out the four-team field with 133 points.

The Jackrabbits will take a week off for training before returning to action Sept. 17 at the Woody Greeno Husker Invitational in Lincoln, Neb.
