Jacks score late to defeat Panthers
BROOKINGS — Chelsea Goosen broke a 1-1 tie in the 61st minute of the match to give South Dakota State University a 2-1 victory over Northern Iowa Friday night at Fishback Soccer Park.
SDSU got on the board first as freshman Kellyn Farrell scored for the Jacks 20 minutes into the contest.
UNI would tie the contest up in the second half after Candice Divoky scored off an assist from Allie Sowell. Goosen, a freshman from Olathe, Kan., put the Jackrabbits ahead for good scoring off a deflection in the box.
SDSU held a 24-15 shot advantage for the match. South Dakota State junior goalkeeper Jenn Davis recorded four saves on the night, including three in the second half.
With the win, SDSU recorded its first victory over a Division I opponent at Fishback Soccer Park and marked only the second time the Jackrabbits have defeated a Division I opponent in the program’s two years at the D-I level.
SDSU hits the road next week as the Jackrabbits travel to Iowa State on Sept. 9. Start time for the contest is at 7 p.m. at the ISU Soccer Complex. Following the game in Ames, the Jacks will travel to Minneapolis to take on the Gophers of Minnesota. Start time for the match against Minnesota is set for 1 p.m. at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
