    Hattervig, SDSU women win at season opener


    GLYNDON, Minn. — The South Dakota State University women’s cross country team opened the 2005 season in strong fashion Friday, sweeping the team and individual titles at the Dragon Open hosted by Minnesota State, Moorhead.

    The Jackrabbit women had five runners place in the top 10, led by sophomore Shannon Hattervig, who claimed the individual title in the 5,000-meter race at Ponderosa Golf Course in a time of 19 minutes, 36.28 seconds. Junior Katie Tornberg was third in 20:11.98, followed by Becka Mansheim in fifth place, 20:34.13, and Megan Poppens in eighth place, 20:38.08. Freshman Sarah Hanson was 10th in the field of 92 runners with a time of 20:43.29.

    SDSU tallied 27 points to win the seven-team race. St. Benedict (Minn.) was second with 49 points, while Concordia (Moorhead) was third with 117 points and North Dakota State took fourth with 121 points.
