Jacks drop pair at Cyclone Classic

AMES, Iowa -- The South Dakota State University volleyball team battled inconsistency all day as it dropped a pair of matches on the opening day of the Cyclone Classic at Hilton Coliseum.

The Jackrabbits fell in four games to Iowa State in the opener, then lost a five-game to Stephen F. Austin (Texas) in the nitecap to fall to 1-5 on the season.

    Iowa State 3, SDSU 1
SDSU claimed the first game, but host Iowa State came back to win the next three to defeat the Jackrabbits 28-30, 30-23, 30-23 and 31-29.

The loss overshadowed a strong performance by SDSU sophomore Amy Anderson, who established a single-match career high with eight blocks and added 10 kills to go along with a .474 hitting percentage (10 kills, 1 error in 19 attacks).

Kristina Martin led the Jackrabbits with 14 kills, while Minette Ridenour posted her third double-double of the season with 13 kills and 13 digs. Samantha Pearson shared team-high honors in digs with 13.

Stephanie Behm tallied 28 set assists in a reserve role, while starter Kristie Klusaw was credited with 25 assists.

The Jackrabbits posted a .389 hitting percentage en route to their victory in Game 1, but were held to a .168 percentage over the final three games as ISU held a 14-11 advantage in team blocks.

Katie Jessen led Iowa State offensively with 20 kills, with Erin Boeve adding a double-double of 17 kills and 11 blocks. Nicole Lorenzen contributed 13 kills and 14 digs, while setter Jessica Klein nearly posted a triple-double with 55 assists, eight kills and nine digs.

    Stephen F. Austin 3, SDSU 2
The Jackrabbits shook off a sluggish start to take a 2-1 lead, only to see the Ladyjacks of Stephen F. Austin roar back to take a 30-14, 30-32, 20-30, 30-12, 15-11 victory.

Four different Jackrabbit players reached double figures for kills as Ridenour led the way with 15. Anderson turned in her second strong performance of the day with a career-high 14 kills, followed by 11 kills from Martin and 10 from freshman Kathleen Hruska.

Behm, again in a reserve role, tallied 41 set assists.

Sara Doschadis handled the libero duties for the Jackrabbits, tying a career high with 26 digs.

SFA, the defending Southland Conference champion, received 17 kills apiece from Laura Cramer and Lauren Railey. Traci Rhode added 14 kills, while setter JJ Jones contributed 56 assists and 11 digs. The Ladyjacks were led defensively by Stephanie Figgers' match-high 28 digs.

The Ladyjacks held a .274 to .184 advantage in hitting percentage.

SDSU will attempt to rebound Saturday with a 10 a.m. match against Drake (Iowa), before closing out tournament play at 5 p.m. versus Montana.
