Brookings airport fix likely costly
BROOKINGS (AP) - Town leaders in Brookings have until November to develop a plan for the airport that complies with federal rules.
A judge ruled in favor of a developer who went to court after the city refused to give him a building permit because the project was in a newly discovered runway protection zone.
That project is moving ahead.
But now the city must decide whether to shorten the runway, move the runway or move the airport altogether - an option that could cost $28 million.
One factor in the decision is whether South Dakota State University will need to use larger planes for traveling to sports events.
"We're trying to look into what they're going to be using, to bring in ... say a football team and so on," Patrick Dame, manager of the Brookings Airport, said. . . .
