SDSU survives in five
Three South Dakota State players recorded double figures for kills as the Jackrabbits outlasted Utah Valley State in five games Saturday, giving coach Andrew Palileo his 100th victory at SDSU.
SDSU, 9-10 overall, won by scores of 30-26, 25-30, 30-25, 30-32 and 15-12 before a Frost Arena crowd of 469. Utah Valley State, which dropped to 6-7, held off an SDSU match point at 29-28 in Game 4 to force the fifth-and-deciding game.
Kristina Martin led the Jackrabbit offense with a match-high 24 kills. Laura Slagter and Minette Ridenour came through down the stretch to tally 15 kills each. Ridenour completed a double-double with 14 digs.
Kristie Klusaw ran the Jackrabbit offense with 50 assists as SDSU out-hit the Wolverines .238 to .208.
Defensively, Amy Anderson was a force at the net with nine blocks as SDSU held a 15-11 edge in team blocks. Slagter added five blocks and sophomore libero Samantha Pearson notched 27 digs to tie a career high.
UVSC put four players in double figures for kills. Camie Manwill led the way with 20 kills, while Brooke Adams and Anne Olson each tallied 18. Jessica Endres added 14 kills.
Lacee Koelliker was credited with 65 set assists and Maegan Hoyt collected a match-high 31 digs.
Palileo, in his fifth season at SDSU, has compiled a 100-54 record (.649 winning percentage) since taking over the Jackrabbit program in 2001. His career mark now stands at 185-99 (.651).
SDSU returns to the road for matches Monday at UMKC and Tuesday at Creighton (Neb.). Both matches are scheduled for 7 p.m. starts.
