Jacks fall again in five

For the second straight night, the South Dakota State University volleyball team rallied to extend the match to five games. And, for the second consecutive night the Jackrabbits fell short, falling to IPFW in a battle of Division I independents Saturday night at Frost Arena.
After IPFW won the first two games by scores of 30-25, 30-26, the Jackrabbits took games three and four by identical 30-28 counts. In Game 5, the Mastodons pulled away midway through the frame to take a 15-10 victory and the match.
IPFW improved to 14-2 on the season, while SDSU dropped to 10-13 overall, including 1-5 in five-game matches.
Five players notched double figures in kills for the Jackrabbits. Minette Ridenour led the way with a double-double performance of 20 kills and 19 digs. Amy Anderson recorded a career-high 17 kills and Kristina Martin posted 17 kills. Freshmen Mackenzie Angner and Emily Rooney contributed 13 and 10 kills, respectively.
SDSU setter Kristie Klusaw was credited with a career-high 73 assists in the losing effort. Jackrabbit libero Samantha Pearson added 18 digs.
For IPFW, the Brazilian tandem of Fabiana Souza and Cynara Martins tallied 20-plus kills each as the Mastodons out-hit SDSU .263 to .219. Souza led the way with 23 kills and 11 digs, while Martins posted 22 kills and 12 digs. Nicole Howell added 13 kills and Jessica Miller tallied 10 kills.
Erika Lietzke turned in a double-double for IPFW with 44 assists and 11 digs. Peachy Jankowski led the Mastodons with 16 digs.
SDSU returns to action Oct. 15, closing a three-match homestand against Texas-Pan American. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Frost Arena.
