Jacks fall to #24 Long Beach State

LONG BEACH, Calif. — Long Beach State (Calif.) rallied from an eight-point deficit in Game 1 and went on to sweep South Dakota State during play at the Baden Thanksgiving Tournament Friday afternoon.

The 24th-ranked 49ers trailed 23-15 in the opening game, but outscored SDSU 15-5 the rest of the way for a 30-28 victory. LBSU won the final two games by scores of 30-21 and 30-18.

SDSU sophomore middle hitter Amy Anderson turned in a strong performance on both sides of the net in a losing effort. The Huron native shared the team lead with 10 kills and added seven blocks, including three solos. Her four block assists upped her season total to 129, surpassing the previous Jackrabbit single-season record of 126 set by Shauna Sturm during SDSU's NCAA Division II national runner-up season in 2001.

Kristina Martin added 10 kills and seven digs for the Jackrabbits, who fell to 16-18 overall. Kristie Klusaw tallied 29 set assists, while senior Sara Doschadis contributed 12 digs.

For Long Beach State, 24-5 overall, Ali Daley paced the offense with 17 kills and a .406 hitting percentage (17 kills, 4 errors in 32 attempts). All-American Alexis Crimes posted 12 kills and Robin Miramontes added 10. Dyanne Lawlor ran the 49er offense with 37 assists, while Heather Laudato led the defense with 12 digs.

    LBSU out-hit the Jackrabbits, .303 to .197, and held a 50-34 advantage in digs. SDSU out-blocked the 49ers, 10-8.

The Jackrabbits close out tournament play and the 2005 season Saturday with a match versus UC Santa Barbara. First serve is set for 5 p.m. Pacific Time (7 p.m. Central Time) at the Walter Pyramid.
