Mansheim breaks record in mile
CAPTION: Becka Mansheim set a Jackrabbit record in the indoor mile run Saturday at Notre Dame.
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- South Dakota State's Becka Mansheim broke the school record in the mile run during indoor competition Saturday at the Alex Wilson Invitational hosted by Notre Dame.
A junior from Brookings, Mansheim posted a time of 4 minutes 51.57 seconds, bettering the previous Jackrabbit record of 4:54.06 set by Jodi Smith in 2000. Mansheim placed 10th out of 24 competitors in the race, which was won by Iowa's Meghan Armstrong in 4:40.59.
Elsewhere on Saturday, Katie Tornberg finished fourth in the 5,000-meter run at the Iowa State Last Chance Meet in Ames, Iowa, clocking a time of 18:00.70. Former Jackrabbit runner and current assistant coach Sheena Dauer won the race in 17:36.14.
Krystie Ratzlaff added an eighth-place effort in the mile run with a time of 5:07.72.
In men's competition, Matt Olsen was the top Jackrabbit finisher with a seventh-place showing in the triple jump. Olsen's top mark was 46 feet, 8 3/4 inches.
With the indoor season now complete, the Jackrabbits will turn their focus to the outdoor season, which is scheduled to begin March 24-25 at the Raleigh Relays in North Carolina.
