Jacks win two one-run games
KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Kim Westendorf and Jenna Marston pitched complete-game victories as South Dakota State ended play at the Rebel Spring Games Friday afternoon.
With a 3-2 victory over Toledo (Ohio) in the first game of the day and a 1-0 eight-inning win against Saint Bonaventure (N.Y.) in their tournament finale Friday afternoon, the Jackrabbits improved to 11-7 overall. SDSU ended the Rebel Spring Games with a 6-2 record.
SDSU 3, Toledo 2
Erin Jones started two Jackrabbit rallies as SDSU got back on the winning track.
Jones doubled to lead off the the third inning, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Samantha Heinzman and scored on a squeeze bunt by Tessie Winterton to put the Jackrabbits up 1-0.
In the fifth inning, Jones walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a base hit by Winterton. Winterton later scored on a Rocket error as SDSU took a 3-0 lead.
Toledo strung together three hits in the sixth inning to score twice and pull within a run at 3-2, but Westendorf settled down to get out of the inning and hold the Rockets off the board the rest of the way. Toledo stranded eight runners in the game.
SDSU 1, Saint Bonaventure 0
Despite being limited to one hit for the game, the Jackrabbits pulled out a 1-0, eight-inning victory over Saint Bonaventure.
Freshman Jenna Marston out-dueled Brianna Bricker to improve to 5-2 on the season. Marston struck out four and did not walk a batter en route to a a two-hitter.
SDSU scored the lone run of the game in the top of the eighth. With the international tie-breaker in effect, pinch-runner Brooke Postma started the inning at second base. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Chris Pesqueira and later scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Kassy Hernandez.
Marston retired all three SBU batters in the eighth inning on infield popups.
Heinzman recorded the lone hit of the game for the Jackrabbits, a fourth-inning single.
The Jackrabbits return to action March 17-18 at the Lobo Classic hosted by the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.
