Jackrabbits upend UC Riverside in softball
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — SDSU used four runs in the top of the fifth Friday afternoon to record a 9-6 victory over UC Riverside at Lobo Field in Albuquerque, N.M.
The Highlanders drew first blood scoring single runs in each of the first four innings. Melissa Sanchez put UC Riverside on the board in the first inning, scoring a homer to center field. Jessica Black followed in the second with a one-run homer off SDSU starter Kim Westendorf.
The Jackrabbits countered with a two-run inning in the top of the third. With Sam Heinzman in scoring position, Tessie Winterton, who had two of SDSU’s nine hits, tied the game with one swing of the bat, connecting on an inside the park homerun.
The Highlanders took a one run lead in the bottom half of the third when April Murray scored after Kristie Martinez reached first on a fielders choice.
Freshman Jerra Steffen tied the game at 3-3 after Brittany Postma reached on an error, scoring Steffen. Postma would give South Dakota State its first lead, crossing the plate after Amy Wittgenstein advanced to second on an error.
UC Riverside regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth off Jenna Marston, who entered the game for Westendorf. Pinch runner Tricia Adgar moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and then advanced to third following a Katie Curtis single to right field. Adgar later scored after Hailey Marshall moved to second off an
error.
SDSU broke the game open in the fifth, scoring four runs. Winterton walked to open the inning and moved to second following a one out single by Chris Pesqueira. Junior Steph Kuhl then stepped to the plate and drove in Winterton. Pesqueira came in to score on a base hit by Kiley Schwedhelm. Senior Kassy Hernandez knocked in the final two runs of the inning with a single to right.
UCR tallied two in the bottom of the inning, but could get no closer than 8-6. Heinzman closed out the scoring for the Jacks in the top of the sixth, crossing the plate following a Pesqueira fly out to right.
Marston walked one and struck out two as she improved to 6-2 on the season.
The Jackrabbits continue action at the tournament today with a 1 p.m. (MT) match against Texas Tech.
