Larson Blanks Waldorf 8-0
BROOKINGS, SD - Christian Larson pitched a one-hitter to earn his first victory of the season as South Dakota State defeated Waldorf College 8-0 in a game shortened to six innings by rain and wet grounds Tuesday.
Larson had no decisions in his first five starts. He walked none and had two strikeouts as he lowered his team best earned run average to 3.66 for 32 innings. Waldorf’s only hit was a single by Jim Pitt to lead off the fifth inning.
Chris Iverson led the ten-hit SDSU attack going 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Korby Mintken was 2-for-2 including his first home run of the season and scored three times.
SDSU took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Jake Rogers led off with a single, then stole second. Mintken walked. Tyson Fisher flied to center with Rogers moving to third, and Rogers scored the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Nick Adams. After Cal Lewis walked, Mintken scored on a single by Iverson.
Mintken homered to lead off the third. Then Fisher doubled, but was out at third as Adams reached on a fielder’s choice. Lewis singled before Iverson singled through the right side for another RBI. Lewis scored on an infield ground out by Brian Estes.
And the Jacks added three more in the fourth. Rogers walked and Mintken had an infield hit. Fisher reached base on an error to load the bases. Adams tripled to right field to clear the bases but was out at home trying for an inside the park home run.
SDSU is scheduled to play Dakota Wesleyan in a single game Wednesday (3 p.m. Bob Shelden Field), then has a four-game series with North Dakota State scheduled at home on the weekend, playing a single game at 3 p.m. Friday, a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday (seven inning game followed by a nine-inning game) and a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday.
