East plays Fort Dodge for state berth
By Jason Cowley, Journal sports writer
FORT DODGE, Iowa -- The Sioux City East softball team has been down this path before.
For the fourth straight season, East will conclude its campaign at Harlan and Hazel Rogers Sports Complex.
The Black Raiders, though, need a win over home-standing Fort Dodge in tonight's Class 4A regional final (7 p.m.), to make their season complete with a state tournament berth.
East advanced to its fifth straight regional final with a 1-0 eight-inning win over city rival North in Saturday's regional semifinal.
Fort Dodge, meanwhile, is also playing in its fifth straight regional final and the Dodgers, who downed Johnston 1-0 in a regional semifinal, are shooting for their fifth consecutive state tournament appearance.
"It should be a pretty good game," said East senior catcher Alisha Wheat, who had a hand in the winning run in the eighth inning on Saturday. "It comes down to both teams want it just as bad when you want to go to state."
Wheat was intentionally walked in the top of the eighth as North Coach Kevin Dicus elected to pitch instead to sophomore Lauren Nugent. Nugent's clutch two-out bloop single to center field scored pinch-runner Whitney Hesse with the game's only run.
"I didn't think they would," said Wheat of the intentional walk. "I've never had that before."
Kacie Ogburn pitched a two-hitter and struck out four to improve her season record to 28-11. The South Dakota State University recruit will sqaure off with Fort Dodge senior Kelsey Jones. . . . (Read more)
