Jackrabbits shut out Panthers in opener
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — Chelsea Goosen netted two goals as South Dakota State opened its 2006 season Friday night with a 3-0 victory over Northern Iowa at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex.
Goosen, a sophomore from Olathe, Kan., put the Jacks on the board eight minutes into the contest. Kerstyn Farrell gave SDSU a 2-0 advantage halfway through the second half, scoring off a corner kick.
Goosen added an insurance goal late in the contest to give the Jacks the 3-0 victory.
SDSU held an 8-5 shot advantage for the match, including a 4-3 advantage in the second half. South Dakota State senior goalkeeper Jenn Davis recorded the shutout for the Jacks, while Heidi O’Mara made five saves for the Panthers.
With the win, SDSU moved to 1-0-0 on the year, while Northern Iowa dropped to 0-1-0 on the season.
The Jacks will take on Northern Illinois in DeKalb, Ill., Sunday. Start time for the match against the Huskies is set for 11 a.m.
