    Jacks dominate season-opening meet


    FARGO, N.D. -- South Dakota State placed eight runners in the top 10 as the Jackrabbit women's cross country team easily won the season-opening NDSU Cross Country Open at Rose Creek Golf Course.

    The Jackrabbits recorded a team score of 21 points, well ahead of Concordia (Moorhead with 64). North Dakota State was third with 71 points, followed by Minnesota State, Moorhead with 92.

    Becka Mansheim led the Jackrabbit contingent by winning the 5,000-meter race in 17 minutes, 54.13 seconds. Katie Tornberg came in second in a time of 18:00.88.

    The Jackrabbits then claimed the fifth through 10th spots. Freshman Amanda Kuchta, Yankton, led the next pack of SDSU runners with a fifth-place time of 18:52.48 in her first collegiate race. Claire Steinke was sixth in 18:555.76, with Caitlin Berry seventh in 19:05.61. Also runner for the Jackrabbits were Sarah Hanson, eighth in 19:16.43; freshman Danielle Burke ninth in 19:18.30, and Anne Stangler 10th in 19:18.82.

    SDSU will return to action Sept. 16 at the Woody Greeno Husker Invitational in Lincoln, Neb.
