Samantha Pearson named Defensive Player of the Week

South Dakota State University libero Samantha Pearson has been named the Division I Independent Defensive Player of the Week by a vote of sports information directors representing the 10 independent schools.

Pearson, a junior from Chaska, Minn., collected match highs with 18 digs against ninth-ranked Wisconsin and 15 digs versus Oklahoma at the Wisconsin Inntowner Invitational last weekend in Madison, Wis. She added 19 digs and four service aces in a come-from-behind five-game victory over Oregon State.

In the three matches, total 11 games, Pearson averaged 4.73 digs and .55 service aces per game.

Pearson is the second weekly award winner for the Jackrabbits in as many weeks. Senior Kristie Klusaw was named the Division I Independent Setter of the Week on Aug. 29.

The Jackrabbits, 5-2 overall, will play three matches in Iowa this weekend. SDSU will open the slate at 7 p.m. Friday in Des Moines with a match at Drake, followed by two matches Saturday at the Cyclone Classic in Ames. Saturday's schedule consists of an 11 a.m. match with Valparaiso (Ind.), concluding with a 4 p.m. match with host Iowa State.
