Jacks, Wildcats end in 2-2 draw

FARGO, N.D. — South Dakota State and Weber State battled to a 2-2 draw Friday night at the Bison Invitational in Fargo, N.D.

Weber State took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute of the match as Natalie Ellis scored off a pass from Linsey McFarland and Haley McCoy.

SDSU’s Erin Kasmarik, a sophomore from Coon Rapids, Minn., tied the game three minutes later off a free kick. Junior Vanessa Paswaters gave SDSU a 2-1 advantage in the match, scoring off an assist from Kerstyn Farrell. The goal was Paswaters second goal of the season.

WSU’s Shaylee Stegen tied the game at 2-2 in the 88th minute to take the match into overtime.

Each team had a couple of scoring opportunities in the overtime sessions. Sophomore Chelsea Goosen looked to give the Jackrabbits the win in the first overtime, but saw her shot sail wide. Senior goalkeeper Jenn Davis recorded six saves on the night, including two in the overtime periods to preserve the draw for the Jacks. Wildcat goalkeeper Karen Long also made six saves.

With the tie, SDSU moved to 3-1-1 on the year, while Weber State, who qualified for the College Cup last fall, brought its record to 2-2-1 on the season.

The Jacks will continue action at the Bison Invitational on Sunday when they take on IUPUI at the Ellig Sports Complex. Start time for the match is set for 11 a.m.
