  • New assistant position

The women's team must be adding a new assistant coach to the program. There is a position open and advertised. What I do not get is that the postition anouncement says that it is for two positions.

    It's one position.

I'd bet $100 (not really, I'm a professor and it's summer, thus no income) that Megan Vogel gets the job.
    Holy nutmeg!

It does say right in the job advertisement that it is being used to fill two positions within the program. It would be odd and very unusual to have that tidbit in the ad if it wasn't actually happening.

The search chair is Katie Falco, so I would assume she is still with the program. That would mean that if the ad is correct, we either are losing Mehlum or going to have five full time basketball coaches in the women's program.

I think this is one of those situations where familiarity with Megan will be good for her but also work against her.

For what its worth, we don't even know that Megan has or will apply. It could be time for both the program and for Megan to "spread their wings".
But, I know who my choice for the job would be if I was hiring.

Lets hope AJ can put everything to the side and make the best decision for the program. Based on his history, I'm guessing he'll do that.

            Re: New assistant position

It say's, quote: " This notice of vacancy will be used to hire two assistent coaches" ,end quote.Does that mean one replacement position + one new position, or, two new positions for a net gain of two.The language used is open to speculation .....very vague (sp?)Also, the reference to recruiting is open to conjecture as to who that might apply to, unless everyone on the coaching staff is a "recruiter" to some extent or another.

              Re: New assistant position

At the time we went D1 didn't we have X number of years to hire another full time assistant coach? Maybe that deadline is near and this is why the position is being advertised. I SURE HOPE NOBODY IS LEAVING.

Sorry, I didn't see that last line in the ad about two positions. That's interesting, and unusual. I hadn't heard about anybody leaving. Maybe we're hiring two additional assistants for our most successful program.

I know from talking to her that Megan is interested and that SDSU is where she wants to be. I also saw her having lunch with AJ in Brookings not that long ago.

                  Re: New assistant position

The NCAA limits WBB to 4 paid positions(can't be split), so it seems either Melum or Falco is leaving. There is one other possibility. If I'm reading the job posting correctly, the two positions are full-time. If Falco's current position is less than full time, then they could have her reapplying for the expanded job. The same could be true if the old position had teaching(or other) responsibilities and the new position is purely coaching.

Whoops, missed that Falco is heading the search committee. With that, it might be that Melum or Falco is shifting to a different position in the department; freeing up a coaching slot. It seems a bit odd to me that the newest WBB coaching hire(June 2008) is heading up the search committee. Could Falco have moved into an administrative position during the off season?

                    Re: New assistant position

Terry just reported on tweeter that Laurie Melum has stepped down to run the academic side of the athletic dept.

Melum accepts new role at SDSU

South Dakota State University associate women’s basketball coach Laurie Melum will step down to accept the newly created position of assistant athletic director for academics, director of athletics Justin Sell announced Monday.

“This position allows us to continue to enhance the quality of education for our student-athletes,” said Sell. “Laurie’s academic work with the women’s basketball team makes her a great fit for this position and I’m excited, not only for her, but for all of our student-athletes.” . . .

. . . Replacing Melum on the women’s basketball coaching staff will be Emilee Gusso, who will fill an assistant’s role on an interim basis. In addition, the Jackrabbit women’s basketball team is currently in the process of hiring a third full-time assistant coach. Katie Falco will return for her second season as an assistant to round out Aaron Johnston’s women’s basketball coaching staff.

Gusso, who will fill the roles of recruiting coordinator and academic coordinator for the Jackrabbit women’s basketball team, was an assistant coach at Drake (Iowa) the past three seasons. She helped guide the Bulldogs to the NCAA Tournament in 2007 and a WNIT appearance a year later. Gusso previously served as a graduate assistant at SDSU during the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons, helping the Jackrabbits through their first two years of transition to the Division I level. . . . Re: New assistant position

I wonder if Laurie's position is funded (in part or whole) by the NCAA academic money, or if it's a new position funded internally. My guess is it's the first one.

Whatever it is, there's no doubt she's a great choice and will do a terrific job.

                          Good for her!

She's obviously got a knack for it, and my hat's off to her for (apparently) knowing herself well enough to make an unconventional move.

Speculation on my part here, but maybe its a move for her to stay with the university in the event that a new headcoaching position will open as SDSU in a few years? When AJ gets his big time break coaching at a major college, maybe Melum is holding her time to get a headcoaching job but not wanting to leave the school. This is just my random thoughts that are most likely not even close to a posibility but it could be an option for her. Show what she can do running academics for the school atheletic department, then when that opening occurs she could be first in line. I would think AJ would love to keep her as his top assistant, however I am sure SDSU would love to not lose them both. We know how SDSU loves hiring internally. We have great student athletes and this should and will only keep getting them better.

I would think staying involved with the program as the associate head coach would be the direct route to becoming a head coach, not leaving the actual coaching part of it.
