Really sucks to think AJ is going to have to turn away some of the best players because he doesn't have enough scholarships to go around. What a problem to have.
Oh to have such issues... I hear there is a great player over in Minneapolis who hasn't announced yet... I think we should try to get her
Here's the problem I have with all this complaining about the refs and blaming the refs for us losing. Lets say Warkenthein makes both free throws at the end, or Griffin misses the layup at the end, or the defender turns her even 1 time to make some clock run out instead of just letting her run straight down the court, or some thing happens differently in the last minute of the game and we end up winning. None of those things at the end had anything to do with the refs, only with the players. If one of those things turns out different and we win the game, no one would be on here complaining about the refs calls in the first half.
By the way, that last play reminded me of another South Dakotan who lost on a last second layup. Remember the UCLA-Missouri mens game when Tyus Edney of UCLA hit a layup at the end after running straight down the court without getting turned? The defender for Missouri was Jason Sutherland.
I have to strongly disagree, even if we had won that was a terribly officiated game and I believe they need to be called out on it.
Yes. The "injured" player being pulled stinks of something south of Brookings. But look at it this way. She's a 55% shooter. So she makes 1 of 2, Baylor up 1. SDSU goes down and scores the exact same layup. SDSU up 1. Baylor goes down and hits the game winner. Baylor by 1. Same outcome.
Yes. I saw the player hopping up and down and was pissed last night. But the calmer head in me says logically we would have been down by 1 anyway after she took those shots.
Still don't like the "homer" feeling from the first half that sapped some of the life out of our girls. But we can't change it now. Can only hope our returning players use this to fuel their fire next season and go 33-0 and deep into the field of 64 come this time next year.
Seriously, how many teams can say they have EVER won 30+ regular season games in DI women's basketball. I can probably guess at a few - UConn, Tennessee, and that might be the extent of the list. SDSU's women put together an AMAZING season. Proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that they CAN play with the big dogs on the road. And should have earned a TON of respect this season. I told an SDSU friend of mine the other night that AJ will have SDSU in the Final Four within 5 years. What top player in Minnesota, South Dakota or Iowa wouldn't want to play at SDSU. SDSU had the best season among all DI teams in the upper midwest AND beat teams from the BCS conferences at home and on the road.

The problem is though, by now it's apparent to the players that if you even touch a baylor player, it's a foul, so, how are you gonna " turn" a player when the "refereeing " has that idea firmly implanted in your mind?
Basketball is contolled by referee's,if they are fair & impartial,it's the teams that determine the outcome, but, referee's can &do affect the outcome of a game. This isn't the first time, nor will it be the last.
Where's the ethics in this world when people say she "knows" the rule book, & it's a " smart" move, when they also know that the player isn't hurt bad enough to not shoot HER free throws on the foul.
Honestly in my mind.. the thing that hurt us the most in the first half was the fact that they got Ketty in foul trouble and she only played four minutes...
she had four points, two steals? and two assists in four minutes not to mention the loss of her on D...
Losing her, I think, also limited what could be done with Jill Young.
But I'm sticking by what I said-- Baylor would've found a way back into that game, officials or no, and Jenn W. stated that the team -was- making dumb fouls in the first half.
Baylor got aggressive and the Jacks got sloppy. YES there were bad calls made, but I'm not going to say that there were so many that they changed the outcome of the game materially.
I mean, say Baylor gets half as many free throws and they pull within 8 instead of 1 at the half. That's not a material difference as far as I'm concerned when you're playing a team like Baylor.

I will make this observation, though:
SDSU did NOT play over their heads last night, but Baylor did.... They shot so far ahead of their season free throw percentage...............
You know, I thought the officiating wasn't the best but what the heck do you do? We're the new kids on the block and have to earn the respect. Big conference schools always get the calls because the refs want contracts with those conferences. This isn't new ground and SDSU will always battle that. I'm not saying it's right or I agree with it but its a fact.
SDSU is now on the map! We will get more respect next year. Hopefully that will mean a better seed if we make it back.
The announcers were fair to both teams. We were a great underdog story and Baylor has dealt with a lot with the issues their coach went through and the injury to their best player. I will be pulling for Baylor the rest of the tournament.
The bottom line is we had chances down the stretch and they didn't pan out. In years past we would all watch March Madness because it is the best sporting event, period. The emotion of the winning shots and the crushing defeats is unmatched in sports. We were on the painful side of that last night but the cool thing is that we are a part of that now and its awesome.
I did not think the ESPN announcers were biased against the Jacks. I commented several times to my wife while we were watching the game (and let me tell you, she's a very vocal Jack fan!) that the ESPN announcers were very complimentary of the Jacks and I thought, leaned in favor of the Jacks through much of the game.
I have no comment on the officiating, as I know first-hand it's a tough job. The game was called close, though. I don't like where we were sent by the committee. However, the women's tourney is different from the men's. Ask Duke players how they feel about playing at Michigan State. There's a need to award the games to universities to drive attendence. But aside from all of that my real comment is how much respect I lost for Baylor in the last minute of the game. I mean when the "injured" player who shoots 55 percent from the free throw line was taken out. It was legal, but to make that move the hall-of-fame coach and the player had to lie. That's what they did...lied about the injury. No class. They player was not hurt. Moment later when Baylor scored its second-to-last hoop, watch the bench. Watch the "injured" knee jump high in the air and back down several times. It's easy to spot because it's the one with the wrap. So that's my gripe. Not the officiating. And all credit to Baylor for hannging in the game the entire way. But I don't have any respect for that move, and won't be cheering for the Bears the rest of the way. Sorry. Maybe this is sour grapes, but I don't feel that way now. I feel it was a no-class move by a coach I previously had respect for.
The coach from Baylor was a real piece of work. Not gonna go into it. The substitution had a real odor to it. I agree.
Maybe she knows her rules, the ESPN guy said it was legal and a smart call. Being a SDSU alum, its hard to say that, but we just came up short, and I am still proud of our team and what they accompolished. This year is in the books and nothing can change that not even the Baylor coach. She did not look too healthy and she probably should be in bed resting.
Here's my only complaint: and I could list several, but I'm only going to list one.
The "injured" player...who left the game, came back made a rebound and got fouled and then "left" the game again when it was time for her (55%) to shoot free throws.
She was Jumping Up and Down on the bench when that last shot was hit.
Too injured to shoot FT's, but able to jump up and down?
Baylor's coach was a whiny prima donna the whole game...the time she flipped out and took off her vest was an obvious offensive foul...her wing player literally shoved Muck, I was calling for the foul myself from my couch...and that's what she flipped out on.
I give the Baylor players alot of credit, they came through when they needed to.
But I will NOT give her credit...she replaced a poor ft shooter with a good shooter under suspicious circumstances, and acted like she was "too good" for the Lady Jacks.
I will not cheer for Baylor, and I usually do cheer for the team that knocks my team out.

I also thought the ESPN announcers were horribly biased against the Jacks. I damn near turned the sound off last night. This is a case of bias against the underdogs. I saw it in the mens tournament in Minny too. The officiating in the Dayton/KU game was simply horrid. Fouls would be called on Dayton and KU (Aldrich in particular) got by with murder under the bucket. I am still not sure what to make of it.....bias or incompetence on the part of the officials.
Anyway.....you gotta be proud of those Jack women. They have done a heck of a job!
Hey WYO,
Was it ever confirmed that our men's team got stuck with a sub-par hotel in Minneota? For Jackrabbit fans...it was rumored that our men were stuck in a pretty lousy hotel in north Minneapolis while the big boys were down south in beautiful hotels. I can't confirm it.
Does anyone here know how that worked for the Jackrabbit women...as far as hotels?
Maybe I'm not being objective about this...but it seems like the ncaa wants us 'little' folks in the Dakotas to go away...or something like that. I have this theory (and I'm full of those) that it's a subliminal thing on the part of officials. I was able to go to the USC game when the Bison men's team played here in December. We were up by 5 with a few minutes to go. Not 'one' break went our way. Not one. You could just feel it wasn't gonna happen.
The conversation here reminds me a lot of our men's experience. I'd have to agree with almost everything I've read here about last night's game.
Ca
PS - Let's keep this rivalry as friendly as we can. We've gotta stick together. Wins & losses between our two schools will go in cycles. Both have a lot to be proud of. We were the pioneers...the ones who took the heat for this 'terrible' idea of moving up. And now...the 'other' two schools decided that it wasn't such a bad idea after all.
