Re: NCAA screw job
Here's my only complaint: and I could list several, but I'm only going to list one.
The "injured" player...who left the game, came back made a rebound and got fouled and then "left" the game again when it was time for her (55%) to shoot free throws.
She was Jumping Up and Down on the bench when that last shot was hit.
Too injured to shoot FT's, but able to jump up and down?
Baylor's coach was a whiny prima donna the whole game...the time she flipped out and took off her vest was an obvious offensive foul...her wing player literally shoved Muck, I was calling for the foul myself from my couch...and that's what she flipped out on.
I give the Baylor players alot of credit, they came through when they needed to.
But I will NOT give her credit...she replaced a poor ft shooter with a good shooter under suspicious circumstances, and acted like she was "too good" for the Lady Jacks.
I will not cheer for Baylor, and I usually do cheer for the team that knocks my team out.

In the first half, our big gals didn't get to play. You have Maria, Stacie, and Jen picking up early fouls. Jen was the only one who could play much of the first half. Morgan picked up 3 fouls in just about 3 minutes. Her fouls might have been good calls but would she have been in there picking up 3 quickies if the other "bigs" weren't in trouble. I know Stacie and Maria came in later in the half but with 2 fouls already, do you think they played the way they could? At the end of the first half, SDSU had Sunnarborg and Schuttloffel on the court because of foul trouble. The more experienced players were hedging and not giving up open 3's like Baylor got at the end of the half. They are good players but in a game like this, you want the big 3 to play most of it.
Can somebody tell me how many charges were called compared to blocks(on drives)? They might of just been that much faster but I don't think it should have been that bad.
I think the second half the ladies played tentatively. They didn't want to foul out so they didn't help like they normally would. I remember the foul called on Jill with 2+ minutes left. She might have grazed the jersey but it looked like she barely touched her. If they call crap like that, you can't play. The only game I remember that was close to that was the SDSU-Oakland game.
O.K. I THINK I'm done.
Good season ladies. The seniors had solid careers here. They will be missed but I know they helped with build the program for the future.
she had four points, two steals? and two assists in four minutes not to mention the loss of her on D...

Re: NCAA screw job
Here's the problem I have with all this complaining about the refs and blaming the refs for us losing. Lets say Warkenthein makes both free throws at the end, or Griffin misses the layup at the end, or the defender turns her even 1 time to make some clock run out instead of just letting her run straight down the court, or some thing happens differently in the last minute of the game and we end up winning. None of those things at the end had anything to do with the refs, only with the players. If one of those things turns out different and we win the game, no one would be on here complaining about the refs calls in the first half.
By the way, that last play reminded me of another South Dakotan who lost on a last second layup. Remember the UCLA-Missouri mens game when Tyus Edney of UCLA hit a layup at the end after running straight down the court without getting turned? The defender for Missouri was Jason Sutherland.

But I'm fine with the results.... I'm sure AJ and the girls knew, going in, that they weren't going to get the benefit of the doubt and they still played an -outstanding- game. I remember when the announcers said something like-
That was a good move. As long as the ball leaves you hand, it's not a travel. They called a travel on that last play.
She was straight up but they called a block on that.
If I was the young coach, I'd work the officials. They'll give calls to the experienced coach.
These aren't word for word and there were others. I don't know I say favorable of SDSU, I'd say they were calling a more straight up game than the officials.

Re: NCAA screw job
One more thing about the outcome last night. Of course it could be for any athletic contest where the officials impact the game. I feel most sorry for the players. For years they run their guts out trying to get better, spend long hours perfecting certain moves on the field or court, lift weights until they want to puke, countless hours of practice time and then study film looking for an edge. All that time is spent hoping it will pay off in an important game, like the one last night.
As fans, we watch for a couple hours and give "expert" observations on what happened. We don't see the sweat, hard practice time or the hours spent in a lonely gym shooting baskets.
So, if some of us come across as being a little bitter about outside influences affecting the outcome of a game, it's because we feel that young people got cheated after working so hard for their moment in the sun.

Re: NCAA screw job
I thought the ESPN guys gave us as much credit as they can, and their job obviously at the end is to promote the winner, which just happen to be Baylor. This seems to happen all the time. If we are the free competivtive society that embraces capalistic economics, we dare not talk losers over winners. Because SDSU did not win, we should not expect more in terms of publicity.

I find it very telling that no one is writting up a cover story of how the game played from beginning to end... not one person not affiliated with either team is writting a game summary that starts at the beginning and covers how the game played out... I havent seen one reporter with the guts to stand up and say... BS on the refs for taking the momentum out of the game....
I doubt ANYTHING will ever be done about the officiating at this game... but I have to move on because I want to focus on the AMAZING things this jackrabbit team accomplished this season. I am not going to let three people in stripes take my pride in this season and make it focus on them instead

Re: NCAA screw job
The sad reality is that for anyone who didn't watch the game and only saw highlights, read the post game write-ups or looked at the box score they would assume that Baylor overcame a big deficit and earned a hard fought victory. In looking just at the box score that's an easy assumption. The real story will never be told in the media, unless Fran Fraschilla comes out in defense of SDSU's effort. Those of us that watched know how the first half played out. Baylor happened to be the better team for the final 20 minutes, but the first 20 belonged to the stripes. As someone else mentioned, when the color crew calls out the officials at the 19:30 mark of the second half then you know there's a problem. Sucks now that we have to wait 365 days to see the women's team pull of the win they should have had last night.

Re: NCAA screw job
I also thought the ESPN announcers were horribly biased against the Jacks. I damn near turned the sound off last night. This is a case of bias against the underdogs. I saw it in the mens tournament in Minny too. The officiating in the Dayton/KU game was simply horrid. Fouls would be called on Dayton and KU (Aldrich in particular) got by with murder under the bucket. I am still not sure what to make of it.....bias or incompetence on the part of the officials.
Anyway.....you gotta be proud of those Jack women. They have done a heck of a job!

Re: NCAA screw job
Odd isn't it? A player goes 0-10 shooting and makes some bad passes and we say, "He/she had a bad game." A coach doesn't make an adjustment, call a timely timeout or whatever, and we say, "The coach blew it." Those are acceptable.
But, when refs clearly dictate the outcome of a game and we say something negative about them it's called "whinning."

Re: NCAA screw job
I was listening to the game on the radio, we were up by double digits, had to do something at work, went back to radio right before the half & they were with in 2. The anouncers all the time saying how cold Baylor was shooting, but uncharacteristicly shooting a high percentage of thier foul shots.
I thought, why are we fouling them if they can't make anything anyway.
Didn't know the officiating was that bad, being on the radio.
Now it makes sense.
I don't want to remain negative about the game, just want to thank the women of SDSU for making the whole State proud! It was a fun journey you took us all on.Here's looking forward to a great year next year, again , thanks team& especially thank you seniors, you will all be missed.
