  • Re: Montana game thread

Having been in Cancun and seen the Maryland game, might I suggest a modification of "should have won" to "very easily could have won" the Maryland game?

Maryland was taller and more athletic, no doubt, but our girls played--at least in the first half--a better team game. I think the difference was Maryland's defensive pressure on the Jacks, which kept our shooting percentage down.

And: Maryland's women weren't THAT much more athletic than SDSU's were.

If they play 10 games, it probably averages about a 10-12 point Maryland win, which is what this one was. But I daresay that SDSU would steal a game or two in that 10 game series--especially if our outside shots are on--which they weren't in Cancun.

The SDSU women's basketball team is fairly close to being able to play toe-to-toe with Top 10 teams. As AJ has been hammering home, a big key is a consistency that our women haven't yet shown. I think they will. (The other big key would be a true center in the middle, which we need to steal away from some Big 10/12 program in the coming recruiting years.)

    On to Summit League play!
    "I think we'll be OK"

Pretty late to be posting (just back at 3 a.m. today from Cancun), but didn't want to "dodge" the question. I did notice a few fans who weren't there for the Illinois game, but not many...I think our fans were a little more spread out than the first day. There were more like 100+ Jack fans than 200...but we were the super majority. Allison Anderson had 30 family and relatives, friends along!!!

Will edit this post after reading some of the other posters comments. 1) Agree with Filbert...we had a chance to win against Maryland. We were a bit tight IMHO in the first half (and who wouldn't have been...this was a big jump up from other competition) and missed open shots. In the second half Maryland put some serious D on us. Which leads to 2) while we didn't get a field goal in the final 9+ minutes of the Montana game, we stayed ahead by a stifling defense, and some assist from our depth (a factor in both the Illinois game and the Montana game). The depth of our bench is going to be extremely helpful in games where we might often fall behind (in some cases because of the competitor's equal or stronger athletic balance), but just plain wear them down! And it also allows us to "find" those who are "on" or more ready to play or having a better night...which doesn't happen with teams that have a strong starting five, but declining talent on the bench.
