  • Home grown talent for Women's team??

Looks like Coach Johnson may be able to find some D-I talent right in his own backyard.  It appears that Brookings may be home to some of the best the state has to offer.  Here are highlights from a Brookings Register story:

    Summer of success
    BY ERIC X. VICCARO

Five Brookings High School girls basketball players have already been diligently preparing for a return trip to the Class AA state championship game next March.
How? Simple. Summer ball — against future NCAA Division I caliber competition.
The Bobcat players are 5-foot-9 senior guard Tiffany Moe, 5-9 senior forward/center Kelli Fargen, 5-9 guard/forward Brittney Carlson, 5-7 senior guard Nicole Helsper and 5-11 junior forward Liz Helsper.
All these girls have done the past two seasons is win a state title 47-46 over Aberdeen Central during 2003-04 and participate in the state final during the 2004-05 campaign, a 21-point loss against Sioux Falls Roosevelt.
All the girls said they have higher aspirations for 2005-06. It could be the type of season in which nothing less than a state championship trophy will do. And that suits the girls just fine.  .  .  .

The girls are competing for a squad called the South Dakota Elite, coached by Jim Waggoner of Brandon. The elite team also features players from Brandon, Yankton and Worthington, Minn.
On July 9-11, the girls competed in the Nike USA Cup basketball tournament that took place in Chicago.
The team won the 17 "A" bracket with an unblemished 5-0 mark.  .  .  .

During the summer, the girls have rolled to a record of 13-7 against stout competition including players such as the reigning Minnesota Miss Basketball Katie Ohm and Kansas State University-bound talent Ashley Sweat from McPherson, Kan.

Best of luck to these Bobcats.

    Go State!  ;D
